Nice picture of an ochre starfish,
Pisaster ochraceous. This species is quite variable in color: orange like this individual to purple, reddish, or brown. It was one of the species badly hit by
sea star wasting disease that devastated many starfish species from California to Alaska in 2013-2016. They are major predators ("
keystone species") of marine invertebrates in the mid-lower rocky intertidal zone, feeding especially on barnacles, whelks, and mussels. Fortunately, they have recruited and recovered well in some areas of their range, but not all.
