Non-fishing related

NOT FISHING RELATED. I have an HP6700 that almost every time I turn it on gives me some kind of error prompt, it causes Tourette's. Time to ship it to the landfill. I do occasionally "scan" a document, have never used the fax function.

Recommendations out there for a simple printer, easy for two old people to use.

@Evan B && @Josh - if this thread is too far out, delete it. I am certainly outside of anything fishing related.

Do you want/need to be able to print in color, or can everything be in black and white? I use a Brother black and white only laser printer in my home office. It has no bells and whistles, just prints documents (and has wifi so I can print from my phone). It can take inexpensive third-party toner cartridges, which saves a lot of money over time.

Same as Zak....that's all I needed for home use.

I had the same issue a year ago with my "fancy" printer/scanner/do everything....always had to troubleshoot something with it until it thankfully died.

Get an Epson ET series and set fire to that HP before you dump it. A couple years ago we first bought an HP. It went through ink cartridges like crack (that's how they make their money). My wife is a teacher and prints A LOT. We were tired of buying (and recycling) expensive ink cartridges, so we replaced it with an Epson ET-3850. It uses refillable ink and the bottles last forever. It's also been rock solid an much nicer to use than the HP.

Stick with Brother - they'll rip you off the least when it comes to ink. The others like to set expirations on the carts and it won't print until you replace them. So basically a subscription cost to keep your printer working.

Our latest HP inkjet printer hasn't given us many problems. Buying replacement cartridges cost more than the initial cost of the printer. Feel like I'm being robbed.

HP printer cartridges have a chip in them that prevents you from using non-genuine HP cartridges and using HP genuine cartridges but not of the correct configuration. Avoid.

We use the Wi-Fi connection a lot with several users in our house.
We also are using scanning to PDF a lot more nowadays to help with communications with our accountant and other support professionals.
Color - no so much. If the color cartridge dries up, printer is non-functional until the cartridges are replaced.
Make sure you have a standalone black ink cartridge and not one with '3 in 1' black and color combined packages.
With Wi-Fi, makes sure to is compatible with the latest technology (5g). All devices must be using the same connection to be able to print.

I gave up on inkjets. We don't print a lot, so they clog....Brother, HP, all of em. and they are a PITA to blow out. And they clog right after you refill'm for a couple hundred bucks. I got a laser, I don't think the brand matters, it copies, scans, and prints color. Found on sale. So far no problems.

I'll also note that I haven't owned a printer in like 15yrs (unless you count the PNWFF mail label printer). I either have my wife print at work for me, or use the local library. I realized not having a printer that I only need to print things like 3-5 times per year at most. Not nearly enough to justify owning something that causes as much grief as they do.

I got an Epson a little over a year ago. For all of the cartridges it's about $90 but you rarely have to change them all. I usually go through one of the black ink cartridges before I have to change the color cartridges

I use the OEM cartridges as I don't trust the recycled ones. I print often enough that I don't want to be without a printer at home

Definitely factor in the cost of the cartridges, even over the cost of the printer IMHO. Hopefully this printer will last longer than the previous one, that crapped out a few months after the warranty expired!

Ditto, probably 10 years since I have used my laser printer, library and saving work to files works for me. But when I was printing, a laser printer is absolutely the best. My ink jet cartridges would dry out between uses. Laser ink lasts forever…

Set fire to it, eh?! "Cracked" me up. And yes, this HP printer has gone through toner cartridges like crack - I've installed supposedly "compatible" cartridges with mixed results. HP knows instantly that I've cheated them out of revenue so I think their AI algorithms send the error prompts to punish me and give me Tourette's. (just kidding, sort of.)

Please share the make/model if you don't mind. Tks/Pat

Like others I have a black only Laser Jet. Canon image class that is probably a dozen years old if not more. Cartridges last forever and aftermarket brands work. Does scan, print, copy.

Another happy Brother laser printer user.
