Prescription Sunglasses

I guess as I am nearing 40 my eyes have decided they don't like my contacts as much...

Never really thought about prescription sunglasses but am now in the market. What does everyone use?

I'm a little overwhelmed with costs and the different coatings/lens tints. Help! 😁

I'm a Smith fanboy. They have an Rx dept and you can send them your Rx to have lenses made.

Chromapop is the shiz. I like brown or green lenses for most applications. But I like gray when I'm offshore.

I've worn prescription sunglasses for many years. I used to buy regular sunglasses that I liked and then bring them to a glasses shop and have them cut polarized lenses to fit. But that's expensive. More recently I bought prescription sunglasses online at a discount.

I'm partial to Persol frames and polarized dark amber/brown tint.

Here's the online company I bought from last:

Well I'm kind of cheap. I have been wearing glasses since I was the 9th grade. But when I get my eyes checked I get lens that are glass. Might be heavier than plastic but I'm used to glass lens. I just get those sun glasses that are called Cocoons. I had my eyes fixed about 5 years ago. Any bright light or sun off of snow and I have to wear sun glasses. If I go out in the bright sun I better be wearing them of just sit with my eyes hurt.

It was pretty easy. I already get my prescription glasses there. just picked out a frame/style and had them in a week or two. I would suggest not going with the photochromic lenses on the sun glasses(darken in the sun) as they don't darken in the car when driving. Something about the light traveling through the window doesn't activate the shading.

I am currently wearing Maui Jim prescription sunglasses with progressive lenses. One pair has HCL Bronze lenses (Hawaii Lava mirror coating) and another pair with Neutral Grey lenses (Blue Hawaii mirror coating). The HCL Bronze is a high contrast lense and I wear it for everyday purposes. I got the Neutral Grey mainly for Florida because it blocks out a little more light. The mirror coatings, for fashion.

I found the photo chromic lenses do not get dark enough on the water. Also found the bi and tri focal lenses are a great aid in falling down, either in the water or rocky banks.
Since I’ve had both cataract and YAG surgery I am back to 20-20 vision. Got a nice pair of Costa wraparounds with 580P lenses for under $100 at Costco. Their Rx sunglasses are quite a bit cheaper than most, certainly what your optometrist would like to sell you but less choices.

My vision is not too bad, except for the stigmatism. State says I need them to drive. I got a pair of Ray Bans, but worked with the eye doctor on a different, lightly tinted gradient, polarized lens, that works with my progressive prescription and can be made with a big sweet spot. I really like them.

That is what I have for bright days. Mine are readers, not progressives. My latest everyday glasses are photochromatic and I use those in the early am or late pm when light is low.

Does Costco do the eye exam, too?

Zeal Rx glasses are made with Maui Jim (Zeal's parent company) lenses. I've been using them for a handful of years now for my whale research and fish work and they are superior to the Smiths I was using before. Fit is subjective, but overall the frames are lighter (and plant-based) and the lenses are clearer.

Yes, Zeal pays me, but only to use their non-Rx goggles and sunglasses when I'm skiing. I pay for my Rx lenses.

Fashion??

Drivewear polarized photochromic progressive lenses in durable titanium frames work very well in a wide variety of lighting conditions; from dawn to dusk.
I ask the optometrist to make the reader portion to focus at 8" making threading a fly easier.
I get the prescription filled at Costco.

I tried the 😎 Will Smith Men in Black Ray Ban Predator (1) wrap around frames

but found the curve caused just enough spherical aberration with the reader portion of my prescription to make threading a hook a frustrating adventure.
