What is the size limit for posting a photo. I was trying to post a jpeg but always get the warning that the file size is too large. I eventually reduced the size to 256K but even that would not post. Going any smaller and the jpeg artifacts are pretty bad.

Had the same problem when I was posting my Local Bass Pond trip report. I eventually had to open the photos and take screenshots of them so the size would be smaller.

Pictures under 5MB usually post fine for me. When they get up around 8MB I see the error message too and usually resize to 1 or 3 MB. Don't know the actual number.

Tom is correct, the current limit is 8MB. We're open to changing it, but we have to balance site load speed with ease of uploading. That said, I don't ever have any problems myself in uploading web sized images that fall under 8MB..

You shouldn't have to shrink it down that much at all. Can you let me know the exact steps you were taking to upload? What are the original pixel dimensions and file size of the image giving you trouble?

It is very strange, while my photos are uploading the "the cloud", they will not upload here - get a "too big" message. Once all is done, they upload no problem, several mB.

cheers

I use the smallest setting on my Digital camera. That is what works for me. What numbers are they. Hell I don't know. It's just the smallest number.

For the few photos that I post, I use a Pic Resizer that reduces the number of pixels to something that loads faster and easier.

Just to be clear, we want posting photos to be as easy as possible. After all, what's a fishing forum without photos? But we've got to balance a few things as far as running the site.

So it's useful to hear how people are uploading and what problems they are encountering.

It's got to be the way I'm processing (or not processing correctly) the image then. The photo was taken with a Z6 Nikon, the out-of-camera jpeg is 15 MB. I haven't done any post processing of the image, just viewing the file in Photo Mechanic and re-sizing it in Irfanview to various file sizes, all done on a computer. The Irfanview resized files were all under 2MB. I can resize the image to a 5MB file in Photo Mechanic but that didn't work either. The original pixel dimensions are 6048 x 4024.

To load the image I hit [REPLY] in the thread, hit the [Insert Image] button, clicked on [Drop image], browsed to the file and clicked [Open]

The original pixel dimensions are 6048 x 4024.
So, for what it's worth, that is a HUGE size for something like displaying on a forum. 3000 on the long end would be more than enough and make it a lot easier to get the file size down under 8MB without introducing artifacts.

Just testing now I find I can I can post pictures to the site, just not my photos.
But - I can also post a screenshot! Easy as falling on a slippery rock! So for the purposes of this forum - problem solved. I'll do some further trials when time permits.
Thanks!
