Rare wolverine spotted along Columbia River in Portland

A wolverine sighting was reported by two people who were fishing on the Columbia River near Portland on Monday.

Wolverines are such cool animals. Very cool sighting.

Scary critters up close! My only sighting of one came over 50 years ago on a solo backpacking trip in golden trout country of the Sierra Nevada. I was at about 11,000' going down a shallow grade and walked around a big boulder and met a wolverine less than 30' away. To say that we were both surprised barely describes it! It stared for a few seconds then shuffled away. Thankfully. I have met both bear and wolf in the back country and both seemed relatively shy and eager to shorten the encounter. The wolverine took his time, sized me up and then just calmly walked away, no seeming indication of fear.

They've been showing up in odd and unusual places lately, like this one.

Recent postings here and elsewhere about sightings in the Olympics and in the Long Beach/Willipa area as I recall.

Interesting article about wolverine research (with dogs and live traps) happening in the North Cascades.
I stumbled upon one of these wolverine traps once. I couldn't quite figure out exactly what it was meant for until I got home and looked it up.

Saw a show some years ago about a guy in Alaska, iirc somewhere near Haines, who had two wolverines that he had rescued as pups. They acted like dogs, he took them to local schools to show them to children. Pretty interesting.
