Point up or points down? (Poll and comments)

Dishwasher silverware points up or points down?

Okay...knife points down reduces the amount of blood cleanup. If we put our forks down the tines poke through the basket and interfere with the whirly-gig thing at the bottom so the forks go up. The spoons go up so they can be spread out and don't sit in a clump at the bottom of the basket all 'spooned' up.

Tomorrow I'll explain why the coffee cups I use get washed by hand only.

At the age of 16 I became a professional dishwasher at a Denny's
spoons and forks up knives down.
I must say that you guys and gals need to get out and do some fishing, hunting, beach combing, rock hounding, what the hell, go play golf, or tennis, something other than talk about how to load the dishwasher.
And no I did not read all the comments, I just skipped to the end so I could put in my .02.
I put a new scope on my black rifle, aka assault weapon and in 6 shots I had that baby zeroed in.
Raining again here in Southern OR

points up. Any sharp knives at my house get washed by hand, even our often-used potato peeler. Despite the absence of evidence, I feel the knives stay sharper when washed by hand.
Wait! You have sharp knives!!

Ok, seriously. Back to the coffee cup thing.
I have a few cups that I use exclusively for my coffee and they only get washed by hand. Why? It's because I reheat coffee in the microwave quite a bit. Sometimes it's from the pot of left over coffee from yesterday. Other times the cup I'm drinking from cools off because I'm busy or distracted writing out long posts like this one. In either case into the micro it goes.

Years ago I just used any cup from our cupboard and when it was done in the micro the freaking handle would be so hot I couldn't pick it up without a pot holder. Same thing with dinner plates and bowls. What all these dishes had in common was that they were ceramic or porcelain. Then one day I brought home a new cup, (from the Redshed) and used it to reheat some coffee. The handle was not blistering hot to the touch like all of my other cups would be. The only difference between this one and all the others was that it had not made a trip through the dish washer.

If you have a ceramic cup handy, turn it upside down. You see that little ring around the bottom that has no glazing. That's the culprit. It goes into the dishwasher upside down, has water sprayed on it for a time until it gets thoroughly wet, then the machine goes through the dry cycle. All those wet dishes start heating up. Steam develops. What do we know from breathable waders? Water vapor molecules are smaller that those of liquid water. The vapor penetrates the ceramic through the unglazed ring. Because ceramic is basically dirt with the water cooked out of it, the vapor finds a home and changes back to water when the temperature drops. Now you have a ceramic cup with a moisture content. Moisture, aka water, is one of the things most affected by microwaves.

We purchased some new dinner last year and the wife was very happy that the plates and bowls didn't burn us when we reheated food on them. I told her to talk to me in a couple of months. Sure enough, we are back to the pot holders.

I have noticed that if you let your cups sit for many months they will slowly dry out and act like new.

Oh it had been a very telling week.... I now realize I am more my mom than my dad. Mom's gone now, and so dad has reverted to doing things the wrong way haha.

I have several more Thanksgiving dinner "discussion" topics that have come up this week... if you don't want to talk politics with family today ask these...

* cups/glasses in the cupboard - open side up or down?
* why do our external "front/back" doors open inward?
* do you folds/roll/stuff your underwear in the dresser drawer?
* do you use cream/half&half/milk on your cereal?

I have a big list, I could post one poll a month... haha

Have a great day!

That is so awesome! I'm gonna have to remember a couple of those for Saturday when we hang out with in-laws!

Probably start the conversation with, "I don't want to start anything controversial...." pause for dramatic effect..."but, what do you think about this?"

It can be a lot of fun! And truly let's you see other in a different non political way...

We had 4 sons and ate at the dinner table (when not running between sporting events)... we used the "Gun to head Austin and answer" question game (not a real gun) ... you HAD to choose only one answer...

* vanilla/chocolate
* popcorn/ice cream
* Sunrise/sunset
* pizza/spaghetti

And we always encourage the "why do you say that" but we never let it get to the angry point.
