Here’s the thing about the upper Deschutes area …. Sun River, Bend, etc.
Last year we went down mid-late April. The week before we left the weather had been mid 70’s all week with a high of 78. Perfecto, huh? Tennis racquets, biking, hiking right? I was gonna have some alone time so I targeted a couple bodies of water knowing the upper Deschutes was closed. We stayed at Caldera Springs, a newer development, just south of sun river resort area… Well…. This is what we got. 6-8” of snow every night, gorgeous sunny frrrzing icy mornings. You wanted to be hunkered down by 5pm very night because the clouds rolled in and the dumping would start. Did manage to ice a line and freeze up some guides for an hour or so. The one river I was hoping to spend some time at I did not do. I drove there to do a visual but I followed the advice of the local fly shop who warned it would/could be a dangerous trek in the snow conditions in addition to going solo. Evidently this area can even get a snow storm in June, or so I was told. We were there for five days. The second day we drove to Bend mainly for REI. We had to buy some boots and some weather appropriate gear. So unprepared, as we had packed shorts, light pants, light socks etc. But we still had fun!!!!
