Phillipson Bamboo Rod

Cliff

Steelhead
Good morning,

I'm casually looking for a decent Phillipson bamboo rod in the 8ft - 8.5ft range. I'm not even sure which models I'm most interested in, but I'm open to suggestions. I much prefer to see rods in person rather than online, so if anyone knows of a local source I would appreciate a heads up.

Thanks
Cliff

It’s all good Cliff.....good choice going for bamboo! Where are you going to fish your bamboo, lakes...rivers or both? I fish bamboo year round 95% in lakes.

Both. I was a Trail Blazer for a little over 15 years so I primarily fished high lakes for many years. I'm going to be focusing more on streams in the future.

So how did you pick Phillipson? They’re good bamboo rods, but there are so many others too. If it’s your first one, don’t limit yourself to one brand. What is your price range?

I've been fishing bamboo rods since 1995, both vintage and new rods. I've always loved W&M Granger rods so a lust for a Phillipson is a natural progression, since Bill Phillipson worked for Goodwin Granger and Phillipson rods were also made in Colorado.

Big fan of Phillipsons. I've got a 7'6" Phillipson 5 weight which I use for creeks and beaver bonds and brookies, an 8'6" Phillipson for alpine lakes and two 9 foot 7 weight phillipsons for coastal cutts and bull trout.

Ricks Rods bought the phillipson name and the Phillipson inventory of bamboo blanks. He's a great source if you want to buy a used phillipson bamboo rod or need blanks to repair a phillipson or need a phillipson rod tube or a phillipson baseball hat.

He's got two 8'6" phillipson bamboo rods and one 7'6" phillipson bamboo rod for sale right now.

I bought one of my Phillipsons from Rick. You'll pay full price but he accurately describes and discloses what he's selling.

Bought my other Phillipsons off Seattle Craigslist (two) and from PNF member Para Adams (1).

Cliff, I'd post a Want To Buy ad on the Classic Bamboo Rod Forum. There are a lot of Phillipson fans there and likely more than a few with far too many in their collection and willing to part with one. My guess is for a good condition Phillipson you'll pay $350-450 for an 8-1/2' and $600-750 for an 8'. Ricks will likely be a little higher but should have some good options to chose from. I've owned Phillipsons in both lengths and liked them both. Their 8' rods are particularly good all-arounders. Just slightly stronger rod than an 8' Granger. But similar to cast. They are also similar to an 8' Payne 201. If you don't find any good ones around, you might expand your search to a Payne 201 clone...there are lots around and I like that taper a lot, maybe more than the Phillipson or Granger, but all are really enjoyable to fish.

Thanks Ron. I was an original on the Classic Bamboo Rod Forum, back when Banjo owned it, but I've run into a login/PW problem on that site and I can't get the forum admins to return emails to figure it out. I'm limited to reading the messages but I can't log in. Their system doesn't recognize my email address, but when I go to re-register it says my exact email address already exists. Go figure. I appreciate the tip, however.

Hey Cliff, I was having problems myself a couple of weeks ago. Here is Titelines contact information, he's a moderator/admin got me back on. Check your private messages.

Mike, thank you. I'm now able to login on that board, thank you. I started on there way back and it's nice to be able to login once again. I hope all is well with you. Robert K. and I will be fishing soon, you should join us if you can slip away.
