A PFD doesn’t guarantee you’ll survive but it gives you a fighting chance. I see lots of folks on SUPs, in kayaks etc out on the sound year round not wearing a pfd. That is their prerogative of course. Sad event and shit happens fast. Stay safe folks.

If I'm in a kayak in the salt I always have a PFD on no matter what. If I'm alone on the sound in a kayak I also wear my drysuit. There are plenty of comfortable PFDs so theres no good excuse, the drysuit sucks to wear but that water is cold.

If I'm floating, I'm wearing a PFD, including when I used float tubes. 1 catastrophic bladder failure enlightened me.

Floated a section of the Salmon a bit ago and it was too hot to wear a PFD. Did anyway!

Got stopped twice by USCG when yak fishing. Got complimented both times for wearing my PFD and having the required safety gear.

Like @offensivename said, there are plenty of good comfortable models out there.

There's no excuse for these deaths to continue like this.

It's not about your swimming ability, it's about your ability to handle going from 90 and dry to 50 and wet. The shock will override your ability to swim

We just had a 28 y/o fishing at Ringold try to cross the irrigation canal and he slipped and got washed into the Columbia River. Haven't found him yet. Think about wearing a PFD while wading.

Not to mention the real possibility of whacking your noggin on the boat, an oar, your buddies noggin or a branch on the way out.

was on the lake yesterday doing my beetle thing, wind came up, began the shoreline cruise back, came around the point about a half mile from the dock and found two teenage girls on SUP's (left my phone in the truck or would have a pic of the girls as well as one beauty of a bow), one had a big mutt with her, both struggling badly to make leeway against the wind, PFD belts laying on the decks. So rope tie off to the front SUP, used it's leg leash to tie off to the nose of the second SUP, then a tow train. Once ashore we had a brief chat about PFD use and understanding wind impact.
The mutt? 20 yards from the landing and it suddenly jumped off the SUP and thrashed to shore, it's owner screaming "OMG, he's never swam before in his life." Good luck getting him back on a SUP again...lol

I love dogs.... also friggin dog peope man.... Remember in the 70s and 80s and 90s when people left the damn dog at home?

I didn't have to worry about "fishing dogs", "SUP dogs" or the absolute worst... "mtn biking dogs". I'm sure your dog is lovely. Chances are I'll totally love your dog. Unless.... I come around a downhill corner doing 18mph and it's in the middle of the one-way BIKE trail.

Ok, rant over. Oh one more...SUP crowd is the worst at PFDs. Ok, all done. Carry on.
