Passing of author Steve Probasco

Forgive me if posted earlier. Author Steve Probasco passed away last month.

I was given one of his fly tying books right around 40 years ago. I first remember reading his articles likely even earlier in Flyfishing the West magazine from Amato Publications- and the sister magazine to Salmon Trout Steelheader, where he likely posted there as well. Always enjoyed his enthusiastic articles and later his book series of classic rivers of the west.

Through personal contacts I know he leaves behind a very good family.

Hope he is waist deep in a great run and enjoying the scenery. RIP Steve !

I really enjoyed reading his stories and his books. He had a very down to earth way of story telling. He had a chapter in one of his books that told about his goal to catch a sturgeon on a fly… and he ultimately succeeded.

May he rest in peace.

Oh man, I'm sorry to read this. Steve was the one who called me when he was the original editor of NW Flyfishing Magazine and wanted me to produce cartoons for the publication. I always got along great with Steve. He was a great guy. RIP

I'm also sorry to hear this. Back in the late 1980's some friends often joined me on trips to Dry Falls. More than once, Steve Probasco and some of his friends were on the lake with us, and we always knew it because they were a rambunctious crew. They knew how to have fun and find great fishing.

Steve was legit and I'm sorry to hear of his passing. Back in the day I frequently fished with one of his eastside fishing partners (Tim Irish). Tim's stories of nocturnal monster trout they encountered in the seep lakes led me to many nights kicking around those same lakes. RIP Steve!

He had a pattern called the "Night Leech" that was outstanding. I tied a bunch back when we used to troll Lenice in our tubes after dark.

Yes, I also became a night flyfisherman as well via his books or articles (add Del Canty and Joe Humphreys for night inspiration)-even on jetties as he described, with an electronic flash to zap the glow in the dark material on the fly tail.
