Outboard motors

Buzzy

I prefer to call them strike indicators.

I have been looking for just the right boat for sometime now. I found a boat that fits some of my “requirements”. It’s powered with a “40 hp fuel injected 4 stroke motor . Evinrude with Suzuki power head”

Can someone tell me how an Evinrude and Suzuki are coupled?

I feel like I know my outboards pretty well and that's a combo I don't know at all. I would do some research though because Evinrude is no more, and getting parts may be a challenge unless Suzuki is going to support that motor directly. Additionally, most outboard mechanics won't touch a lot of Evinrude motors now.

My 2002 4-stroke 40 Yamaha is pretty much interchangeable with the same Mercury. I think the manufacturers do this. BTW, you're gonna love a 4 stroke.

In the early 2000s, I think most Mercury 4 strokes were Yamahas with Mercury cowlings.

Do not buy evinrude.. they are done as an outboard manufacturer and are not supporting their old products.
Buy Honda, mercury, Suzuki ( newer) or Yamaha.

Even Mercury is fading in regards to supporting older products. For instance my motor is a 1999 and powerheads are completely unavailable.

Mercury does actually look like they're sinking a bit. Just laid off a lot of employees, too. I think they're just getting flat beaten by Suzuki / Honda / Yamaha lately. Suzuki especially has been really ramping up the last few years.

Thanks for the feedback on outboards….. I had already made up my mind on “no Evinrude” and it’s interesting about Mercury.

I passed up a center console aluminum boat with a brand new 30 Hp Suzuki. The nearest dealer ia 90 miles give or take.

The search continues…..

Is there a dealer closer than that for Yamaha / Honda? Cuz new Suzukis are excellent.

All 40hp and under Mercury OB's, and most up to 60 hp, are made by Tohatsu in Japan, who has been making OB's since the 50's, their motors a staple for beach launch panga fleets around the world, clocking thousands of hours with never a fresh water flush.

Mercury may have laid off employees, but it is still quite possible that they’re the largest outboard seller in the US (whereas Yamaha sells the most globally)

I suspect this has a decent chance of being true. Every single bass pro sold boat rolls out of there with a Mercury.

Seems to me that outboards are super regional. Except Evinrude... That's universal.

I bought a 2015 Merc 115 for my Arima. Few hundred hours, great motor. Also have a tohatsu made Evinrude branded kicker, also a good motor.

Tohatsu subbed to Honda for a few years for their larger models... Cheaper way to get a Honda

Suzis are killing it for sure. They happen to be the cheapest by a bit as well and offer a 6 yr warranty.

Interestingly enough, many smaller (under 40? under 20?) Mercury engines are made by Tohatsu these days.

per a Merc mechanic - all are Tohatsu under 40 HP, and most up to 60 hp Tohatsu as well. Merc has been focusing on their Verado line here in the US
