Opening Stockers

I’ve been following the WDFW lake stocking report, as of late, and have been enjoying the fast action. I’ve been using a 3# rod for fun. They’ve been stocking fast and furious, getting ready for the opening week. The side benefit is perfectly sized little trout to smoke up whole, for beer snacks. Yumm. I’ve found the stockers will stay near the dump site for three or four days before dispersing and typically stay close to shore, real close to shore. Technique? Type 3 striped immediately but slow, using a little size 12 micro leech. My most successful is a purple bead, dubbed and brushed out, using rainbow scud dubbing. Looks more like a guppy than a leech..

Our association planted the lake on the 11th. Usually by this time there are a lot of dimples on the surface. This year NADA. Maybe the warm weather will help. I hope so...

Size #12 or #14 Dragonfly nymphs are my go to fly. Down deep for the large carry-overs. A couple of feet down for smaller ones.

Tomorrow a local lake opens. Apparently, it's been stocked with 12" to 13" and bigger 13"to 15" rainbows. Normally I would choose to fish anywhere else... than a crowded lake with dumb stockers. But I'm packing a lunch, and I have my float tube ready with green flies on a sinker. I'm expecting it will be quite a show. Kids with a stringer of trout always make me smile. I just plan on basking in the opening day vibe.

For little fish they actually put up a spirited fight and getting the tug on the sinking line is fun..

I'm thinking of doing the same, somewhere local.. maybe Pine or Beaver lake. I am actually tempted just to bring a gear rod and catch a few, like back in the day! Plus the people watching should be fun!

I've caught plenty of fish at this lake. Sometimes they stock it with HUGE trout. And the Bass fishing can be awesome. But I'm hoping tomorrow proves to be more of a festival than a fishing trip. I probably will rip some fish lips and let them go with an education, but watching the show is my primary objective.

Warning - thread drift: For close to 30 years two of my friends would head over the pass and we'd gather at some lake that "was already open". Herb, following family tradition, had been on the wagon since New Years day - the fourth Saturday was his time to tip a few. We had some amazing opening days at Roosevelt catching kokanee and rainbows. Sometimes I'd make the trip west and stay at Camp Runamuck - we'd fish lakes near What's It Tahuya. Just a different spin on the opener. I miss those days.

My float tube is packed, I hiking into a lake (Hans Solo) that's open year 'round.

Who has their pellet flies tied up?

Actually yes I do! Nobody around to tell me when to get outta bed….one good thing about my situation.

I also get up later, around 9::00am. I have my wife and 2 daughters getting ready for work each work day. I have learned to stay out of the way. So 9:00am it is...
