One for Four

I only went one for four on the cutthroat pond today, but I was pretty happy with the one.

I lost a similar sized fish at this place last fall, but it wasn't as bright or hard-fighting as this one. Water was 58 degrees at the surface.






Whoever left this on a submerged stump in the shallows wasn't doing anything illegal. I have nothing against gear fishing, but double trebles are bad news at this spot. I'll give it to my stepbrother in law when we get together with the in laws tomorrow. He'll put it to work in some bass lakes.

Beauty of a cutt. What's the fly in it's jaw? I wonder if there are warmwater species there. That lure would definitely match the hatch.

Thanks! It's this soft hackle with very webby grizzly hackle and a body mixed from a few different rusty/orange type dubbings. Basically an amateur version of an Enos Bradner carrot nymph. It's been a great fly for me though.

You're definitely right about that lure, but I'd be very surprised if there are any warmwater species there. Haven't seen any sign of them in 3 visits across 2 years and I think they'd be pretty hard on the occasional fry plants that seem to be doing pretty well. Been enjoying your bass pond posts. My personal best westside bass on the fly is about the size of the lure I pulled off of the stump.

Here in Montana. A bass lure with two trebles on it is considered as one hook. Legal but deadly in the hands of an expert. That is if I read the regs correctly.
