Been thinking about my grumpy friend looking down and telling me to get my phat ass back out on the water!

Maybe an event on the Yakima this fall or better yet let's do a group thing out Montana and fish some of the stuff he loved!

Something like the upper Ruby river, Madison.. or wherever..

Let me know if that would interest any of you!

I'll bring the case of Jim Beam to drink in his honor.. a case of 375mls so we can toast him on the river throughout the day!

YOLO!

I've been meaning to take a visit out MT way.
I fished with OMJ on a little blue line that had more fish than I'd every seen.
RB's, Browns, Cutties, Brook's, white fish.
I caught at least one of each, so did Jim.
I caught my one and only, tiny grayling in the upper Ruby!! This was before he bought the ATV.. sad that I didn't make it out there one more time before he passed.. only so much time and money!!

Timeframe..

I'm thinking we could do something on the Yakima in a few weeks. We could rent spots, via Reds, in the little private campground on the river. I stayed there last year with a few friends and loved it.

For Montana, I love going in the spring, before kids are out of school, and before runoff. Mid to late April can be good. Rock Creek. Madison or Missouri.. I should have a small boat by then and will do some floats. Bitteroot can be great there and it would be easy to find campgrounds big enough for however many commit!

So those are my thoughts. Throw suggestions out. I'll create a poll and we'll pick dates. For me a 4 or 5 day trip is sufficient!

LFG!

Haven't been to MT in a while, and haven't caught a grayling, but I like an adventure. Yeah, I'm interested. The Yak may be a more practical choice for me as I hope to get down to the Baja in the spring.

The Yakima in "a few weeks" is November or December, kinda' chilly in the camp ground by my estimation. I haven't been to MT in late April, mainly because I think there's still snow on the ground. Are you sure about your timing suggestions?
I am Salmo_g.. if you wait too long you hit high water.. one of my best trips on the Bitteroot was in April.. it was cold, but not winter steelhead cold. We floated 5 days and had a blast.. I learned a new fly, for me, the Freddy.. easy to tie, but i bought a dozen or so and hooked some awesome fish. Mostly nymphs, but had a streamer rod rigged and a dry fly rod..

I will agree the Yakima is iffy in November, but wanted to throw it out there. I can actually go next week.. leave Sunday morning and stay as long as the group wants too.. for me it just depends on the pass.. the next 4 days are supposed to be iffy and snowy..

@flybill I agree fishing in MT before the spring thaw (high water) is one of my favorite times to fish there. Just be ready to change rods and flies as the weather changes almost constantly.

Late October when the browns migrate up from the large rivers into the tributaries is also fantastic. Snow flurries, warm sun, cloudy skies in the same hour make for fun fishing times also.

I agree right now is fantastic too.. probably better than early spring.. I just don't want too wait a year to make it happen.. rig a dry fly rod and a streamer rod.. I prefer a dry/ dropper.. but for big browns put a hook through a rabbit and cast.. okay not that BIG
