Odd question

Never thought about it before. But the wife was walking by and said ick….. what? Smell. Rod sock. Has a pot hole/seepy soap lake stench to it. 😜

She said maybe wash it. I have never washed a rod sock. Have any of you? I have had to rid of some backing on reels a couple of times due to mold growing…..and it seems to have happened after fishing some lakes with some split pea soupy characteristics.

Thoughts? Do you notice another fly fisherman’s rod sock stench?

Just dont put it in your dryer. I did that and my rod sock because ~2"s shorter.

I hope the kitchen sponge doesn't receive your same treatment.
Washing and cleaning isn't a bad thing.

Mold growing in backing. Yuk!

You know you're not supposed to wear it, right? πŸ˜‰

Yeah might be thick here but what the f’ you eluding too. I treat my dishware like my fish line ? Do you run your lines and all through a dishwasher? WTF?

When I first saw the words rod sock I thought you were talking about condoms. Nevermind that. I carry my rods in rod cases and leave the reels on which is more convenient. My rod socks and tubes stay home. I've also been know to tie a fly on before I load up and turn the rod sections around before loading them in the case so I don't have to tie them on when I unload. Especially the little flies. The only thing that stinks when I get home is me.

I send them back to the rod maker for a little known complimentary"freshen-up".

I get it. Opened it up to sex jokes and dishware washing. Yeah they will stay unwashed.. and hope you had fun. πŸ˜† .
I had an old trail master get funky in the tube. Dried the tent, rod went away wet. The sock washed up fine but took it took a soapy sponge and a day outside before the tube smelled better.

I have never washed a rod sock or bag or ever felt any need to. If fly rods are not dry when I put them away - tho they most always are - I will later take them out of the rod tube to air dry or towel dry before putting them away for extended storage. I don't put much time or care into my fishing gear, but I occasionally clean rods that look like they need it. Reels I clean and grease as needed, which isn't often. I have reels with dacron backing that's been on the spool for decades, no mold or funk, ever. Wet gear gets set out to dry and then put away. That's about it. And for the record, I never clean cork rod grips, never wash waders - rinse them if they are muddy perhaps, and never washed fishing vests back when I used to use them.

My question is, what are you doing with your gear that causes rod sock funk?

much like fishin' hats, wash at your own peril....fishin' shirts are exempt.

fish karma is real folks....

Fishing RF when it is in the onion soup stage really messes up fly line and rods.
I learned the hard way by letting that s--t dry before trying to wash it off.
Wash the rod and line while fresh. much easier.

It’s important to get the new smell out of our fishing gear. It takes time to get the right funky smell. Don’t spoil it by washing it.πŸ˜‚

Use white vinegar in the washing laundry. Throw it in the dryer on low heat until dry. The vinegar smell will go away. If it can rid of guinea pig pee smell out of fleece, it should work.

Never mess with a streak - I do think there's something to the "karma" bit and heard the same from my neighbor yesterday as we struggled to find the right stuff.

I'm with Steve @Salmo_g on rod socks and dacron backing (and I have stopped cleaning cork grips).

I'm surprised no one has brought up farting in their chest waders.

Wash it or buy a new one.
I don't want a petri dish experiment brewing inside my tube the entire off-season. It's supposed to provide protection, not new forms of microbial life.
