October in the Coulee

Got the opportunity for a weekend camping trip with my son and @Irafly. Over the years this trip has included several friends and lots of kids. For the last two, almost all the kids have had other priorities so it’s been pretty special to get a dad and son outing.

Homework had to be turned in the first night. Kiddo had an audience.

Fishing was slow on the first evening. We found a couple but the usual close spots weren’t holding fish. We had a lazy start on Saturday. Big camp breakfast and coffee. Finally got on the water around 9. Eventually we found the fish. Just deeper and farther from camp than usual. Sunday morning we rallied earlier and the effort paid off. We found fish on the weed edges right away.

But it’s not all about the big fish

Or even really about trout

Okay, we didn’t catch the sculpin. It was good situational awareness on Ira’s part to notice another boat with the amazing catch and document the prize.

But there were some very nice fish around and Ira caught a bunch.

My son did just fine, especially considering he really only fishes on this trip.

My son is working on college applications now and unless he decides to stay local, I probably won’t have him along next year. We’ll see.
