Not again

I saw this yesterday afternoon. Disgusting. I'm glad they arrested him on scene and are charging him with felonies since prize money was over 10K. And the fact that this guy was guiding on there makes it even worse, if that's possible. His career there is definitely over. I hope he gets locked up and loses rights to fish in the state forever. After he's found guilty in a court of law of course.
 
The first red flag was that he is a guide. The second red flag was the metal detector beeping.

Need to create a national fish offender registry. How are we supposed to know if there's one of them fishing in our neighborhood?
 
A conman busted red handed. Interesting enough (to me) the world record for a Largemouth Bass is 22 pounds four ounces. And was caught in1932.. Almost 95 years ago!!! This was in Georgia, and was apparently weighed at the post office. This is the most sought after sport fish record in the world, and with all the effort, money, technical advancements and crossbreeding..it still (officially) holds to this day!. Personally I question the "weigh in protocols" in 1932.... However there is a photograph and the financial incentive for deceit was not there. He did feed his family of six for two days with that fish. That damn big bass set a weight record. Lots of people have come sooo close..it's an interesting read about the ones that almost had it.
 
Mike Long lives in infamy for his Bass cheating. But I recall a story about a fish named Dottie, at Lake Dixon. Small lake with big Bass. These guys actually reeled in Dottie and broke the record. Instant millionaire! But wait Dottie was actually "snagged" from the outside of her mouth. These guys all did the right thing and released the fish....That would have been a hard thing for me to do.
 
And A guy in Japan actually broke the record by one ounce. Yea I'm rich! Oh wait it has to be broken by at least two ounces.....that must have been a big let down. Many other interesting stories about the big bass (worth a million dollars) that "got away".

I (think) I remember a salmon derby winner for the former huge Derby Days at Port Angeles. One year the winning Chinook had been "frozen" and thawed before weigh-in. Cheaters gonna cheat. (I think the salmon derby days are a thing of the past.)
 
A fishing derby can be a very cool thing. In the 1970s, I entered an Opaleye Perch derby in Ocean Beach CA. We fished for these perch from the rugged cliffs using frozen peas and light spinning tackle. I was young and dumb and could use my barefeet to get to some (gnarly) good spots...I never won, but it was exciting to be in the running with a 2 lb perch. Just a small tackle shop, drumming up business and promoting a very cool fishery. The Polaroids were pinned up on a board.unnamed-37.jpg

But then you have the high dollar derbies. Marlin derbies are serious business. And so are the bigger derbies on freshwater lakes. Big money with big investments and huge payoffs.....I like the the smaller derbies and wish we had more of them...the bigger ones..not so much.
 
I once entered a kayak fishing derby in La Jolla CA. Over 300 kayaks all trying to catch the biggest White Seabass... I was photographing the kayaks going out through the surf at sunrise ..... by the time I got out to the fishing grounds ,,,the winning fish had already been landed. But I got a couple of fish, and the scene was unreal. Also, at the "awards ceremony" I won a nice raffle prize...and had some great food. Good fun!unnamed-38.jpg

Tell that to the hundreds of people who clog the boat launches in September for the everett coho derby. I usually try to avoid fishing that day.
I think the Edmonds coho derby requires that fish are gutted to avoid people cheating by stuffing them with spare bait herring.

I should have been more specific that the Port Angeles salmon derby days are a thing of the past. It was a huge thing back in the days. I fished it with my dad twice. What a zoo!
 
I fished in the Suquamish fishing derby. Never won a thing. Musta been weights involved.
That derby was canceled around 1966. I’m still pissed and won’t enter another. They’re all crooked as Lance Armstrong.
 
Interesting thought.... a big ol bass might have inhaled and broke off an amount of Texas rigged worms in its day. Who's to say a couple ounces of tungsten couldn't naturally end up in a bass belly?
