The North Sound Trout Unlimited chapter and Confluence Fly Shop held their annual Iron Chef style "Iron Fly" tying competition the other night at Structures Brewing in Bham. There were three rounds, each round had a theme. Those tying had two minutes to dig through bags of normal fly materials and they had to choose two "weird" materials from the junk pile (toys, stuffed animals, doggie bags, packaging trash, etc). Tying time seemed like it was 15 minutes or so for each fly?
The fly themes:
1. Co ho ho and a bottle of chum fly. A pattern to target, or inspired by, this fall’s runs of coho and chum.
2. Anywhere but here fly. A pattern for warm water species to give us something to look forward to during the cold and the dark.
3. Holiday Road fly. A pattern inspired by your favorite holiday from any month of the year.

Probably 30+ people there between those tying flies and the rest of us watching and heckling. The Lions/Packers game was on in the corner and the beer was flowing. I think that @adamcu280, @charles sullivan, and I were the only PNWFF folks there and only one of us was tying. Though Adam represented us well by winning round 2 with a nightmare-fuel barbie head fly.
I mostly was talking to folks and watching people tie (and drinking beer), so I didn't get many individual fly photos. Some reporter I am. So I swiped a couple from the Confluence Fly shot Instagram acct to post here. Sorry not sorry. Go follow Confluence and Northsound TU on IG. All in all, a great event. Sign up for the North Sound TU newsletter on their website and get a heads up next year for the 2025 version.
