Nooksack closing for chinook salmon

Just as I was working up the gumption to Occupy Skagit 2.0 it by taking only my 5 wt to play around for some whiteys and such.

Suppose I still could but I was kinda hoping to blend in…rather than being the only person out there🤔

I’m guessing this’ll be the new normal…rivers (at least the ‘sack) will be closed…..until it’s not.🫤

Assuming the closure of spring Chinook fishing is a legitimate conservation concern, by OS 2.0 standards the river remains open to fishing for other species, particularly game fish species.

Yeah….I’m still working on that. 🙄.

I truly was an Eagle Scout and I’m retired LE…so it’s ingrained in me to follow the rules. 😔

And then as retired LE, we tend to get spanked pretty hard when we knowingly do sumpin’ illegal.

guess I’m still doing the….

that said…I went down to the Skagit and found I could only cast about 20 feet anyway🫤

sounds like the catch reached the limit. Did see a photo of a Very nice springer caught. Better than many Big C fish taken this year, for a smaller river that is.

The catching on hatchery fish was unusually good for may and June. I feel like the fish know they're not gonna be moving in late July like the normally would. I didnt see any wild fish encountered and witnessed an amount of encounters.

I personally had no encounters except for seeing a really nice, soon to be dead steelhead clinging to life in a riffle above 9. He looked to have been in the upper teens at one point, probably spawned a few times already but won't be seeing 2027.

Did find one hell of a run just before they shut it down. Empty that day.

What happened is; Kohl Baxter, the only guide on the Nooksack, took a WDFW Commissioner on a float and they did so well that the Commissioner shut it down at the take out. There must be a moral to this story….

Most do die. Especially the boys.
