Just as a personal observation, about 7 years ago I had a big problem with grubs in my lawn. The local Ag store guy said to use a season long grub control product which contained a neonicotinoid. It worked great, but I noticed that I had little to no fireflies that year and for a few years after. I stopped using the stuff and this year is the first one in a long time that I saw many fireflies. I also have a lot of frogs and other small amphibians in the woods/stream near my place now. They also seem to have disappeared with the grub application
Again, just an anecdotal story, but one that may be valid.
