Nice brown trout from a central WA lake 11/12/2024

@Buzzy and I hiked into a small central WA lake this past Tuesday to see what we could find. This past spring I had fished the lake and only landed a 13 inch Tiger and an 18 inch rainbow. This time we each only landed 5 fish, but 3 of the fish I landed were nice ones, including this husky brown trout (photo taken by @Buzzy):

@Buzzy caught a Tiger trout, so between the rainbows, browns and Tigers, that should give you a hint on where we fished. The other 2 big fish were dark rainbows: a 19 and 23 incher, but very fat and good fighters. The water temperature was 47 degrees with moderate water visibility of around 3 to 4 feet. However, there was a lot of bottom muck floating on the water surface. We had the lake to ourselves all day. Definitely more of a quality than quantity type of day, but I like that. Sometimes this lake has lots of small fish, and sometimes only a few big ones, so you never know what you'll find at this lake. Back in 2017, @Buzzy caught this really nice brown at this lake:

I hooked all my fish using a clear intermediate line with a BH Dark Olive Simi Seal Leech, casting and stripping. I was using what I call a Mach 2 Retrieve; a fairly fast retrieve with no pausing. @Buzzy mainly hooked fish using a small jig leech under a strike indicator, which just goes to show that a variety of techniques can catch fish.

Anyway, hope you guys can get out to these small lakes before they ice over.

It was a lot of fun to meet up with @Starman77 Tuesday; I caught small fish, Rex caught BIG fish! We caught fish. And it was a nice day at the lake.

Geezers?! ;-) I met another old geezer this morning; we both hiked into the lake. I had high hopes that I'd be able to catch a 23" rainbow or a big Tiger or a big brown. It was 27F when I got to the trailhead. Rod was already there and ready to go. I lashed my float tube to Engee's framed backpack and off we went.

The moon was setting as I was driving into the parking area. Rod and I wondered if the full moon and clear night might have been part of the reason the fishing was so slow. Maybe. The water was 46F. Maybe the water temperature had something to do with it, maybe bright sun had something to do with it? Fishing wasn't easy.

For the most part, I fished an intermediate line with a perch fry fly (a darn big streamer) knotted to 2X tippet. I caught three rainbows casting and stripping; none of the trout were photo worthy. My feet got cold so I kicked ashore, pulled off my fins and went for a walk (I remembered to carry my bobber fly rod). Further up the lake I found a place where I could cast without cattails and tules in front of me and managed to hook a Tiger. I'd left my net back at the float tube so landing the fish entailed me somehow keeping the fish on and scrambling back to the boat and net.

Close to 18" long (if you will allow the tip of tail rather than fork of tail as a point of measure).

I love jigs.

Another old geezer. Rod's three years younger, a tough 72 year old! Geezer Power!
