New year reds

I fished with Cpt Clay Sheward (buggywhippin.com) today on New Year’s Day out of Galveston TX. Forecast called for winds of 20mph plus, we considered delaying it to the next day but it didn’t look all that much better so I decided to proceed anyway.

Super tough for sure having only a few seconds to make them see the fly before they see the boat and bolting off in that wind, got humbled pretty damn bad :)

Did get a few though and the first fish of 2025 turned out to be a new Galveston catch and release record (29.5in, over 12lbs), pretty happy about that.

Congrats Lou! It's amazing how often bad conditions can still produce great fish with some hard work.
Have you also fished NOLA for Redfish?

I have not fished NOLA yet, I fished Galveston because we’re in Houston visiting my wife’s family.
I know NOLA reds are much bigger and more aggressive feeders. These Galveston fish you have to put it in front of their face for them to eat.

The "NOLA fish" aint what they used to be even just a few years ago. Act pretty much most days like redfish every place else. Finicky and spooky. Been pretty tough winter so far and the weather this month SUCKS.....lol

I can't tell you how bad I want to go do this. I went a few times when opportunity presented itself and I loved it. Haven't been down there in years.

Be forewarned while its still great its not near what it was even a few years ago. I could go on a page long rant but suffice it to say that CCA could have made a huge impact here but instead chose to favor the banquet money crowd over the fishery.

If you think Galveston reds are picky, you need to try Tampa Bay reds. ;)
Congrats on the big 29.5". That's a fish to be proud of.
