Our old down comforter has finally bit the dust (or more realistically, finally poofed its feathers). Given that we're starting the colder stretch, it feels like a new one would make a nice holiday present to ourselves.

Anyone got any suggestions? I admit, we aren't gentle on down comforters. We run them through the washer/dryer, the animals end up on them more often than they should, etc. So while I value a good nights sleep and don't want a cheapie filled with duck feathers/feet, I also am probably not shelling out for the 2000-thread count with organic baby goose fill $500 version either.

If you've got any suggestions for good value options, let me know.

I find you get what you pay for with down comforters, the lifespan certainly is longer with a good one. Washing at home subtracts a bit of life too, a not good for them sort of thing.

I'm hard on mine, use a cover, and animals are on them.
My current one is from Amazon, but I see it's no longer available.
The smallest baffles keep the loft the longest, and regular fluffing and hanging outside on warm days extends the life..
If I were to buy one today, I'd get this one, with the 20% off it's still not cheap by any stretch ( I'm in the mid to low 200's on the Amazon one)
Probably last 2x as long as a cheaper one, so a wash over the long run.

Had a friend that worked at Pacific Coast Feather, they made good stuff there, happy with mine back when I had one.

Down is never too warm for me...we had 2 mid priced ones we used in winter, was great...but I like to sleep cool. Meaning a window cracked open night, and the room cool.

Why does Europe have this nailed down. Comfort sleeping? Never to warm never to cold.
Been to Finland/iceland/norway and there comforters are just right and comfortable….

Bingo. Having spent a good deal of time in Norway I found that I couldn't be comfortable, especially with someone else, any other way. No one has their covers stolen or worse thrown on top of you.

I don't know where our down comforter came from. Probably Eddie Bauer, Costco, or maybe the old Bed, Bath, & Beyond. I'm just glad it's old and has lost some loft. I don't think you're supposed to wash a comforter; that's what the duvet is for. I shove the comforter away as much as I can. The top sheet and duvet are just right for me, along with the open bedroom window.

I always struggled to get my duvet into the duvet cover and despised doing so until I discovered the burrito method. Look it up. It's magic kinda like electricity.

Company Store. I ordered comparable comforters from LL Bean, Brooklinen and Company store because it is hard to judge quality from a web page. The Company Store Lacrosse version was the best of the bunch and the one that I kept and sleep with. IMO you get what you pay for with down comforters and I'm super happy with the one that I have. Dog loves it too! :)
Its going on 4 years now and is holding up well.

Each winter I break out the now 20+ year old Select Comfory down comforter we got with our first model. Been through 2 and 13/? dogs and been tossed in the wash probably 10 times easy. Don't have another to compare it to, but it's been good for us.

We simplified it when I couldn’t find a quality down comforter for decent price. PrimaLoft.
Especially for sleeping bags. Down sucks for those.
