I woke up early on Friday to clear skies and the sun warming things up early. So, I figured it might be a good day to head up to the mountains and see how my favorite little brookie lake had survived the winter. It’s a small lake of about 12 acres and doesn’t get much pressure. It’s a little over an hour’s drive from the house but the scenery is pretty nice this time of year as things are starting to turn green. I spotted a small herd of antelope on the drive up and once off the highway was treated to several cow elk grazing near a tree line as I approached the launch area. I had the lake all to myself and once I figured out what depth and presentation they preferred, it was “game on”! I stopped counting after a dozen or so and was hooking up on the 3wt. about every fifth or sixth cast. After a few hours on the water, with a short break for lunch I kicked back in and headed for home. It was good to see how healthy the lake was. Game & Fish pretty much lets nature take its course here, they don’t stock it, artificial lure only and you can keep two fish. There is a dude ranch nearby and I think that helps to keep it from being over populated with just a bunch of little fish. There were fry swimming around at the launch area and I caught fish ranging from 6” up to 14”. There might even be a hog lurking in the depths, the thought of that keeps me coming back!
Pretty nice views while fishing.

And of course, Brookies!
