My Cat is Addicted to Fly Fishing

I got my cat addicted to fly fishing. He and his brother formerly had free range of the outdoors, which included nightly hunting activities and the occasional live mouse or bird being brought inside. Since my partner and I consolidated households together at my place, the boys have had to stay inside until they get their bearings. They are losing their minds and I’m sure a lot of it is from the lack of predator time. Well, a chunk of old fly line, half of a trout spinning rod and a hookless fly tied with all natural materials turns out to be a recipe for good old fashioned fun inside the house.

Getting ready to strike.

I got this picture sent to me while at work. He sits at the door to the room with the cat fishing set up all day now, waiting for me to go fishing with him.

Attempting to wrap me up and break me off. Cats pull hard!

I let him chew on it a bit between casts. No hook or shank. Just some rabbit strips tied onto the leader with a short piece of butcher’s twine in case he eats some of it.

And eat he does. I’ll be expecting one black rabbit strip in the litter box tomorrow 🤣Gonna have to rethink my materials for the next pattern.

Anyone else partake in fly fishing for cats?

How about fly fishing for ground squirrels. Bozeman has a number of parks with wide open grassy areas that are still occupied by ground squirrels. They stand like little 8-10” sentinels as they take in the vistas of their domain. Unknown to them it makes them perfect targets for fly casting practice. If you get your hookless fly close, they will chase it down as you retrieve it suspecting an easy meal. Fun stuff when you can’t get on the water.

We had a cat that would watch with great interest when I brought the rod out to practice casting in the pool; eventually I started lawn casting and she would get in that stalking crouch that cats do and then grab the indicator and run, jump and even peel off a few yards of line occasionally. Great fun. Got so she’d get all excited when I headed out to the pool with a rod, follow me meowing. Miss that cat.

A short piece of egg yarn works. They will make it impossible to match new lines to a rod. Best suggestion is to change casting direction and hope they don’t bite the fly line.

One morning I woke up and my cat had a twitching jig lodged in the corner of his mouth. I forgot to put it away after coho fishing the day before and he must have played around with it like a toy.

Let’s just say it was an expensive visit to the vet to get that out.
Yup, been there when Callie was a teenage kitten. Miss her and Jojo, my black tabby half Main Coon boy cat. If Jojo was still alive, he be telling me it is bedtime. What a snuggle bug!
