Headed to the capr lake this morning. It was supposed to be calm, it wasn't and then it was. The "W" wasn't bad. The last four times I've been to this lake, I seen "pods" of carp cavorting, frolicking, rolling all over each other - on the surface of the lake. I spotted six, seven of these pods this morning. On previous outings I'd made casts into a pod and the pod just exploded and the fish vanished in the blink of an eye. I'd been using a big hybrid pattern.
Darc (Desert Fly Angler) tells me he catches fish when he sees these pods. I downsized my fly, lengthened my leader and kept my distance. I landed three fish and had three other eats that I failed to hook. Damn! That was FUN! Pods gone.
I don't know what the pods of carp were doing. There wasn't much of a hatch, I don't think they'd corralled baitfish - I believe this is some morning social function. My mind (?) ran with that.....
After I put the pods down it was back to work trying to find feeding fish and getting a cast before they saw me and spooked. If they didn't see me, I was perfectly capable of spooking them with a crummy cast but.......... yeah, but. I managed five more caprs and one MONSTER BASS:

I'd tied two flies last night that I had high hopes for but (yeah, but) I had the little jig already knotted on the leader and since it was working, I fished it all day.
