mini split heating/cooling systems

I have a 10x20 shed. It's about 12' tall and has a barn style roof with lofts on either end. I'm insulating and sheet rocking it. Seriously considering installing a mini-split. I'm doing research and just wondering if anyone here has installed one or had one installed. I'm looking at something around 12k BTU, 220v, the wall-mount register and a do it yourself kit. Thanks

Retired HVAC guy, I am.
For small spaces the mini split is over kill, for the price.
The plus side is they (mini splits) are really sweet, and quiet.
I don't know about do it yerself, kits.
Ya might be able to order one through Amazon.
I hope yer project comes out good.

When we decided to do away with the window mount A/C unit in the dining room and the swamp cooler on the roof of the upstairs, one of the bidding contractors suggested a mini split for the upstairs rather than all the ducting needed to get cool/warm air upstairs. We ended up with a Mitsubishi "Mr. Slim" for our 400 SF upstairs family room. It's quiet (unlike those noisy things in hotel rooms), efficient - cool in the summer, warm in the winter. We LOVE it. Good luck.

overkill for sure, especially for a shop where work is going on, and the noise differential between a mini-split and 'quiet' wall package model pretty minimal. A unit like an Emerson Quiet Kool with 12K cooling and 10.6 heating, would provide plenty of both, easy install, quick Google search shows Wayfair has them on sale for $600.

not really a shop, more of a fly tying and other vices man-cave so the noise is a bit of an issue. But I'll look into the Emerson unit, might be a simpler less expensive alternative. Thanks

We put a mini split in each of the three downstairs rooms and 2 for the upstairs. We have gone through a summer and winter and it has been fine, though the heat bill in winter was maybe a little higher than I expected but since it was the first time, I'm not sure how it compares with traditional systems. Before that we always had central heating and cooling. I like that they are quiet and it gives the perception of being energy efficient as you can control the setting in each room...whether that is 100% accurate, who knows? But its working fine so far.

Just as an alternative, I have had a Fujitsu mini split unit for 4 years and it has been a nightmare. Won’t hold a constant temperature. Can’t control temperature. I have had people in something like 8 times and still no luck. I guess someone always needs to get a lemon

Agree with Mr Cool. I’ve installed 2 one in my garage and one in my sons house we’ve remodeled in Forks. They are amazing and about 1/3 the cost of installed units. I’ve done all the wiring myself and honestly that’s the only challenge with these units.
The Forks house is a 1940s that had been trashed by the last renters. Forks is a little on the damp side in the winter and the moisture removal of the mini split is a huge upgrade.
