Metolius River hints?

I am a glutton for punishment. We are traveling now back north from California, and 1. I haven’t had a chance to fish, and 2. I want to fish the Metolius again,… no matter how much it kicks my butt, it has done so in the past.

So, this time of year what flies are those finicky trout keying on?

In the past, I’ve seen many guys nymph it, is it kosher to euro nymph it? Or will I get run out of town?

Any hints from the wise out there?

Sam

Usually, the smaller the target nymph pattern, the better. I always use two when I fish the Met. The lower nymph is usually a heavy weighted golden stonefly pattern. The target (upper) nymph is usually in the 16-18 size and tied with a bit of sparkle ... like a Sparkle Pupa.

Thanks for the hints. and the fishing reports:

Rolled into Bend this evening. The whole area is under a flash flood watch until tomorrow night. Drove through rain from Klamath Falls to Bend. Just got heavier and heavier. We decided to stay in Bend with the trailer, just tired of driving. We'll see how it goes the next coupled days and head up there.

ps: It's like 67 and wet. Far cry from the 67 and dry in Northern Cali Coast. I have to find my sweats tonight. Short sleeve, shorts, and flip flops just aren't doing it tonight.

Good thing is the Met rarely blows out

Well, I fished it update.

I found Europe nymphing is very effective in catching whitefish from that river. They sure are strong fish., some big ones too.

Didn’t land any trout. Think I hooked into one or two, saw the distinct rainbow sides bit came off.

I will say it was very nice camping 3 nights along the Metolius. One of my happy places, it holds good memories of family camping of days gone by…

The trout will be close to where the bulk of the whitefish are holding but usually in the faster water. If you were catching whitefish with you nymphs, you were using patterns the trout would also take.

But what the heck, large whitefish are fun and some folks don't even manage to catch those guys on The Met.

It’s a beautiful river. My recent experience is that I have to slow down a lot to be effective, and understand that it isn’t going to be a numbers game very often. It can be a very gratifying place to find success.
