Long Island WA Camping

I have a buddy visiting from NYC next week. He wants to get out camping and do something neither of us has done before. He doesn’t really fish so that’s not really important. I’ve been looking at Long Island for a few years but haven’t been. Has anyone camped there before? I have a canoe and the late afternoon tides look doable for getting there/getting back. I’m looking for any advice or suggestions. Is it worth doing? Is the parking safe on the mainland?
