Klineline Kids Fishing Event

This is an annual event, held in Vancouver, WA, at Salmon Creek County Park for over 40 years. I myself have been volunteering since 1991. This year's event will be on Friday, April 10 and Saturday, April 11. The Friday event is for Special Kids and Saturday's is for all kids from ages 5 through 14. Annual participation runs around 1900 - 2500 kids, fishing in hourly sessions of 45 minutes in Klineline Pond for Rainbow Trout (up to 5lbs...) netted into several shoreline locations. Rods, reels, bait, fish cleaning, and volunteer fishing guides are included in the $5 entry fee, along with event tee-shirts. The park is also filled with group and sponsor booths with things ranging from water quality demonstrations and fish biology to a national chain providing kits, supplies and assistance for constructing a wooden item, ranging from birdhouses to toy boats. The fish cleaning is handled by volunteers from the Lower Columbia Walleye Club, and many other local clubs supporting the event, while too many to list, include The Vancouver Wildlife League, SW Washington Anglers, and Clark Skamania Flyfishers. Natural entertainment is provided by Ospreys and Eagles, with numerous fish stolen from the anglers by Ospreys every year!

As a derby, there are prizes. The top 3 fish (by length) per session for ages 5-9 and ages 10-14 are awarded things like $50 Wal-Mart gift cards, tackle boxes, or other age-appropriate items. In the past, there has even been a prize for the smallest fish per session, a family-size pizza coupon from a local take-b-bake chain! Every session, 2 names are drawn, one for each age group, for a bicycle and a bicycle helmet!

Additional details for sponsorship or volunteer opportunities can be found at www.Klineline-KF.org.

NOTE: If you planned to volunteer at the rod rack assembly, that event is no longer necessary as there have been 20 collapsible metal racks donated, custom designed and fabricated specifically for the event.

Later this week (3/18 - 3/20), the Klineline Kids Fishing non-profit will be at the Clark County Regional Wastwater District offices assembling 2500 Zebco rods & reels for the event. Volunteers are needed. All they have to bring are needle-nose pliars, line nippers, and a folding chair. Details are on the non-profit web-site (Klineline-KF.org) I will be there, as will volunteers from many SW Washington clubs. like the Lower Columbia Walleye Club, SW Washington Anglers, NW Steelkheaders, Salmon Creek Fly Fishers, Clark Skamania Fly Fishers, among many others. Hope to see you there as well!

I was there yesterday and we had a good turnout, but not a great one! We could definitely use more help assembling the rods & reels. The doors open at 2:30, bring your needle-nose pliars and line nippers and as Bob Barker used to say, "Come on Down!"

HUGE thank you to all the volunteers. For the past 3 years we have worked with Klineline to ensure all the kids at the kids fishing derby in Ilwaco have a rod and reel. This contribution to our small community is truly incredible. We have 100 rods landing at the shop tomorrow for this years upcoming kids derby!

THANK YOU!

I lived 5 minutes away from there above the park for 35 years and often flyfished in the evening for planted trout bass in the other ponds and in late winter in Salmon Creek for steelhead. Loved being so close to it , to chuck flies on an impulse. Helped the kids in this event a couple times. Also gave away my. Spinning gear saved. when I saw young kids fishing with beat up gear down there I started gifting kids with my old mitchel garcia gear and such. Such a good feeling to do so.

Rods & reels assembled and in the new racks, bicycles all put together and now down to the final details. Nets go in April 8th, setup day is Thursday the 9th, the special needs event is Friday, April 10th, and the main event is Saturday the 11th! The Ospreys and Eagles will be on-hand to entertain, as usual, as will be hundreds of community members manning educational and entertaining booths all through the park. This is the premiere kids fishing event West of the Mississippi, and maybe the country! Routinely handling 2000 to 2400 kids during the event. along with about 10,000 family members and volunteers, this event isn't small potatoes! Post-event activities include pulling the nets, policing the grounds, pressure-washing the nets and eventually (when we have dry weather) drying the nets and storing them for another year. Come on down if you feel so inclined!

I've been to Klineline Pond (Salmon Creek County Park) the past two days getting ready for the Klineline Kids Fishing Event. It seem like all is in readiness for tomorrow's Special Kids event! I will be there both tomorrow and Saturday mornings in a tackle repair/bait station on the first platform as you enter the park. Stop by and say howdy!

Note: Friday's first session is 9:00 AM and Saturday's is 8:00 AM.

Well, the event is now "in the books" While Friday's event did not have the expected numbers of anglers, the overall event was a great success! Thank you to all who added their knowledge and assistance to the event!
