Ken Balcomb, the founder of the Center for Whale Research passed away this morning. He was 82.
He's been a champion for Southern Resident killer whales, and the salmon that they need to survive, since 1976.
He's also the reason I moved to Washington straight out of high school to try my hand at being a marine biologist. Looking back, it's clear that he was the single most important mentor/role model/life lesson teacher I've had in my adult life. Thanks for taking a chance on a clueless 17 year old kid, Ken.
