Just over a month out...

Will we have open water for March 1st?

Any word on how Amber Lake is fishing? I now live 700 miles away from it, but have great memories of fishing Amber on the opening!
My guess is that it's still iced over. I may drive out in a couple of days and check.

It is often iced over or mostly iced over on March 1, but often there is at least some open water at the launch. Since I live so far away, I don't know what Spokane's winter was like this year. The fishing to the right of the launch can be stellar before it starts weeding up a lot. Great memories! Let me know how it looks!

I saw this on another post...Medical today.

Looks like it won't be too long now.

What a beautiful day Saturday was! Bright sun with a lite chop on the water. It's always a good time fishing with @Irafly and @troutpocket. Nothing like catching fish after fish all day and finishing a very distant 2nd place on the leader board. It can be a humbling sight watching those two easily put a hundred chunks in the net on the 1st. I didn't see half the boats out there catch a fish. On Sunday I couldn't stop laughing at two gear guys throwing what seemed to be buzz bomb sized lures closer and closer to my boat during a steady bite. Like the only place where the fish were biting was underneath me :ROFLMAO:

@Shawn Seeger Unfortunatly I could bring myself to bonk this beauty without place to keep it fresh.

Most of the fish (80%) for me were hot chubby little 8-12" stockers with the rest 16"-21". I have to say they were super light biters. Had to be lazer focused or you missed it. Didn't see any 22"-24" Walters this year.

Hot fly for me was a simple pine squirl jig leach. Match the hatch.

Anyone happen to know if the gate at the Ancient Lakes trailhead (NE corner of this map. Not the lower TH) is locked or open?

It was locked in the fall, but I thought I recalled reading it was usually open in the spring.

Yesterday a buddy of mine tried to fish the Giant Cataract lake but found the gate still closed and locked in Sun Lakes State Park. I wondered why so I drove up to the observation point:

Great water clarity below the observation point! But..........

The launch bay is still totally locked in with ice. The wind was howling, it was 53F outside. I can't imagine the launch bay ice staying on much longer.

No ice on Soap Lake. Alkali was chocolate milkshake colored.

Time to hike in!

When I moved to Ephrata in 1986 there was a trail down the rock slide (talus?) just north of the observation pinnacle, remnants are still visible. A coworker claimed he’d fish the lake at night for browns.

Yep, I remember that trail! Never used it though. My buddy & I fished in our original Caddis donuts (no pockets or back rests) back in the late 80s, early 90s. To this day, I've never had any other trout dive as fast and as deep as those rainbows did. They were incredible fish.
I haven't fished it for years. Might have to put it on the list!

Puget Sound Fly Fishers had a club outing to Dry Falls, it must have been 1983/84 (prior to our move to 98823 in March of '86). I was a real newbie to the world of fly fishing but got surprised a few times by hooking some fat and fiesty rainbows (in the bay that doesn't exist anymore). I had a Caddis donut float tube (with pockets and a motorcycle tube backrest). I don't like getting skunked when I go fishing (it happens) but at least I never tire of the views driving into and out of the lake and especially the scenery while on the lake.

I caught a perch on lenice last week
Ya unfortunately I have gotten multiple reports!!! The best thing you can do is take them home... especially now, because they are fast full of eggs.

Otherwise I will predict that the lake will get rotenoned by WDFW. Our the lake will just be written off.
