I'm retiring - today is my last day

I've been retired for 7 years after 23 yrs in the IT dept at a regional company in a highly regulated industry, but still keep in touch with a few of the folks I worked with. In December I got a call from a Mgr friend saying his boss asked if I could come back to consult. It appears they "forgot" about the library of auditable policy-process-procedures documentation I created, published for all depts on the intranet, kept current, and mitigated internal & external audit findings with...

I declined.

Congrats to all of us.

Good choice...I've known several retirees that got sucked back into a part-time 'consulting' effort for their last employer...which morphed back into a full-time job and the end of their retirement freedom.

The allure of being able to collect a social security pension without penalty at Full Retirement Age is a powerful incentive for many...but it can easily lead to the old 'golden handcuffs' of a job.

Starting my 23 year of retirement. I wasn't into fishing yet back then but I golfed my brains out for ten years while my wife was still working. My motto was,"do what I want to do, when I want to do it."
I spent many years working as a Program Engineer/Mgr, in a extremely fast paced environment. Much downsizing over many years. What a relief when I left!!

I am no longer certified, not current on pertinent laws and regs, and they don't have anyone certified to keep it going. We live comfortably, and I have no desire for "entanglement."

After 26 years I can assure you that retirement gets less arduous and more enjoyable as time goes by.

I didn't get sucked into going back to my old job, but did work as starter at Oak Hill CC fro a few summers just to do something besides golf, ( I got to play Oak Hill on Mondays). When the economy took a dip in 2008 I did get hired at a local electronics company that was right up my alley, privately owned by a great guy. I worked directly for the owner and had a blast for 3 years, and then did various consulting work for them. Worked out great.
