I'm no Bassmaster.

We had a hot weekend in the valley, so we decided that it'd be a good idea to go East, where it was even hotter πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. In the Portland area it was supposed to be 92* on Saturday and where we were heading it was supposed to be 100* by 11am.

We got a last minute cabin for Friday to Sunday on a small mouth river. You know the drill, wake up at 5am, fish till the family wakes up, eat, splash and giggle, siesta, rinse and repeat.

For this trip I brought my Steffen 8' 3" 6/7 and while I was a bit (well... a lot) over gunned for the countless 8-10" smallies, it still got bent and put a smile on my face.

I didn't catch anything of size, and only saw one group of gear guys pull out a pig out of the most heavily pressured eddy in the whole zone. Regardless, the fish were fun and feisty. I caught them on all manners of flies but the most productive were a medium sized popper in the mornings and a black leech pattern with an orange bead stripped fast in current.

Lots of tubing as the heat wore on through out the day.

So one really cool thing we lucked into again was that it was a new moon this past weekend and this area is a certified dark sky area (not sure if thats the correct language). On new moon weekends the Portland astronomers society goes out there and has a star party where they set up all their really cool (and expensive) telescopes and let people use them all night while teaching about the stars and space. Pretty fucking cool for me, but man did it blow my 5 year olds mind.

As Summer keeps rolling by, getting ready for another backpack this weekend :).

As someone who catches small bass all the damn time (I'm like the opposite of @Billy ), I support finding enjoyment in the little guys.

I've also wanted to go to one of those astronomer parties for a while now. I should really figure out where they happen in my neck of the woods.

Great report!

Ha, I hope I didn’t come off as complaining, I just like catching any fish :).

It was really cool. But honestly, I think I like the big pitcher more, ie, just looking up at the sky on a dark night vs the telescopes where my wife and kid were WAY into the scopes.

Oh no! i meant, I support that you found enjoyment in the little guys. As I do also! Big fish are rad, but I still love just catching fish.
