I had a short notice getaway yesterday, and figured a figured a high lake scouting trip would go well with the projected heat wave. I knew the lower lake would be at least partially melted out, and have found in the past that fish in these circumstances can be concentrated and Hungry. The road to the direct approach is unmaintained, and gets worse every year. It's still driveable, but I'm never sure.
Let's just say that there was a bit less open water than I was expecting.

But heck, I'm here; might as well go for it.

You know how Sea Lions stick their fins out of the water to cool off? This is the opposite.

I saw a few midges but zero sign of fish, and after about 1.25 hours headed to shore to warm up. There are few terrestrials around.

I walked around the lake to the overlook rock where one can scan a big section of open water and still spotted nothing. There have never been a lot of fish in this lake, but today I saw nada.

Another 400' of gain takes you to the popular upper lake at 4800' which is still essentially fully ice covered.

As fishing goes, this was a total bust. As nice days out go, I can't complain.
