Hunting pictures

I haven't hunted in quite a while, but really would like to do it again. Of course, my hunting revolves around the dog work. Love watching the dogs do their thing.

My old faithful black & tan lab/shep/golden mutt retrieving on a great opening day on Terrill. One of my favorite days in the field ever.

Pic of me (left) and my buds in our younger years. Probably in 97 or 98.

And the last ducks I harvested in 2014 with my brand new Franchi. I was dogless that day. It has only seen clays since. We don't have a dog right now, but one is in our future...someday...I think...I hope! Haha!

When I first moved to the Basin, one of my coworkers had a Drahthaar, seeing your first picture brings back memories of hunting behind him; we hunted pheasants, chuckar and huns behind that long legged animal. One day on the Royal Slopes, the pheasant hunting was tough but the dog finally got birdy and flushed a hen pheasant. The dog gave us this look like "damn man, you've had me busting my butt all day and you didn't shoot?" and off the dog went down the hill chasing that hen.........

That look might have been slightly better than the "You missed that thing??!!" look. Haha! My buddy's brittany (that was a stud, btw) would do that. He was intense and did not take misses well.

Another “back in the day” post: this photo was taken in September 1966. It’s a one day limit for four hunters. I’m on the left, my lifetime best friend, John, on the right. September was the start of hunting season with doves opening every year on September 1st. Back in the day, it was easy to find good concentrations of birds through the upper and lower Yakima valley. These were harvested near Zilla in an hour and a half or so. I was shooting a Winchester model 42, .410 full choke. John used his 20ga Winchester model 12. Sadly, John died at age 49 from complications of lupus. We did a good bit of hunting , ducks, doves, and some fishing. It was always a treat to be afloat or afield with John.

I was thinking back on dove hunting yesterday. Miss those openers!

Damn, you can shoot! Hitting doves with a full choke 410 is impressive. And you may not want to sell it, but a Model 42 410 would bring a pretty high price. Collector item for sure.
