This happened yesterday near Kettle Falls. I've often looked at these slide areas while on the water but didnt realize how common these events have been since Grand Coulee was built and how dangerous they could be. Some have reportedly caused 65' waves.

Crazy! I had no idea.
Me either. Those slide areas created 'sandy beach areas where we used to anchor up to let the kids swim and water ski.
The same goes for Long Lake/Lake Spokane, the first impoundment on the Spokane River. I now have a new opinion.:)

This reminds me of the Rock Island area of the Columbia River.
There had been a earthen dam that broke and the mountain side on the southwest side of the river/lake. Where Malaga is today slide off and made another earthen dam that also broke.
History is repeating it's self from man made dams

If you look at a Lidar map, you can see a lot of mass slumping/landslides over time around the Columbia and Spokane itself. Typically sand from glacial events layered and over time exposed in a hillside.

Reminds me of what the Madison River Quake/Slide may have looked like back around 1960. Remember reading Charlie Brooks book about the area and the quake and the waves across Hebgen. No images of the waves though……phone cords weren’t long enough back in the dark ages. 😏
