HRQ #4???

Being retired gives me soooo much more fun free time! So I started another version even before I finished HRQ #3...... This one is going to be around 6’4” and way thinner than all before. I’ve just got a thing for shorter bamboo rods, even though I really don’t fish small bushy creeks, I fish lakes. It’s sort of a pain in the ass to cast 9’+ of leader with a swivel, bobber and two flies and the try to net the fish but I’m always up for a challenge! Pictures to follow....

Sounds like fun. Remind me, what kind of bamboo are you using?

Hey Phil, on the last two I’m using some nice cane from a fellow member Dennis. I think you need to try one! Any kind of bamboo will work, just your time involved.

I have a big chunk of garden center bamboo, but I hate to put the time in on junk materials. I’d like to get t it, just have some other projects to get done first.

Think of it as practice if it doesn’t turn out Phil ......anyway....only one way to find out! You can do it! I’ll be glad to help.

To be honest a culm of bamboo is not that expensive. Most of the time you can get two single tip rods out of one culm. Like you said there is a lot of time involved in the making of a bamboo rod so why not start with good bamboo in the first place? I made my first rod with nothing more than a good culm of bamboo, the Wayne Cattanach book and some online support. I still have the rod and it is very special to me even with it's minor flaws as I see them now. Get a stick from Dennis and go for it.

Hey PhilR if you can make it to Bellevue on the weekends I have some extra trout rod culms. I don’t plan on shipping them and I have been flaming and splitting them for bambooflyguy.
No plans to be up that way, but my wife is headed to Victoria next month. I’m sure she’d looove to pick up some bamboo for me 😄

That’s really generous. Thanks!

I fished both HRQs today. HRQ #3 was set up with the indicator, no love but casts well. HRQ #4 had my shark fest flies and C&R’d 13 bass and 1 bluegill! But for a true shoot out, I needed to switch fly reel setups....but the fish were slamming the seals so I just couldn’t stop. Pictures soon. And 15 nice feisty rainbows on another bamboo with leeches. First day back on the water after two weeks of cellulitis......

So another HRQ test today....both with indicators. But, I don’t think the Sylk lines were the same weight and I really didn’t want to change reels on the lake in my pontoon boat. Caught fish on both, (not enough!) and they both bent well. There’s so many differences in the build....I’m going to try with wet lines next.

Wet line test today.....HRQ #4 sings with a type 3 sink, 6 nice rainbows and HRQ #3 one rainbow with the type 3 and 6 bass on HRQ #2 with the seal. So HRQ #2 can handle both wet/dry, HRQ #3 indicator rod and HRQ #4 wet line. HRQ #5 is going to be a lighter line 6’.......
