Hot weather but hotter fishing!!

Went to a well known Montana River for 3 days this week, which had been on my list to fish for sometime and was rewarded nicely... Fish were rising all day long and the key was finding which bug they wanted... First day was good with the cdc caddis but they tended to want smaller size 18's... Although i did hook this nice brown on a beetle pattern first thing in the morning in a foot of water next to the bank.

The next 2 days was fishing tiny bugs downstream style as the fish were spooky in the shallows but more forgiving in the deeper water.

All the fish were good size and had a few take me out to the middle of my backing...

Its still amazes me with so many bug size varieties on the water they chose some of the smallest ones of the bunch...

Weather was hot with clear skies but the fish didn't mind. Overall a nice getaway for few days with superb dry fly action.....

Nice fish! I canceled my August MT. Trip because of Hoot Owl conditions that are only going to get worse as flows decrease and temp increase. Sometimes we need to think about giving the fish a break.

Nice chunks!

not sure why @fatbillybob felt the need to be quite so passive aggressive without really knowing exactly where you were at, but to each their own. Lots of Montana rivers would qualify as "well-known" Montana rivers with many being actual spring creeks and/or outstanding tailwaters.

but I digress, whatever the case may be, that looks like an outstanding few days.

I dont think he was directing it at me personally, but saying with the hotter temps coming up he's going to cancel a later trip... Besides the water temps were 62 degrees when i fished it..... :)

Has hootowl really been every year? The vast majority of my MT GYE fishing was June to 3rd week of July. Perhaps I missed it.
You have , I don’t remember many years they don’t put on hoot owl. Right now I believe most of the rivers in Yellowstone Park is on it , plus a majority of the rivers in Montana . Madison , Gallatin, Jefferson etc etc They usually put it on towards the end of July. Two years ago I believe they even put the upper Madison on hoot owl , It’s usually below Ennis lake . Yellowstone park was effective July 26th .

That can be a really challenging place to fish! Nice work😀.

The river Brian was on (pretty certain) is unlikely to ever see warm enough temps to necessitate restrictions. Big cooldown forecasted for most of MT next week…highs in the mid 70’s with overnight lows in the upper 40’s-50.

Been in SW Montana for the past 7 weeks, got home last Thursday . It was pretty much high 40’s to the high 50’s nearly the whole time at night , early on in mid June in the 30’s at night , with a bit of snow . Not sure we seen anything out of the 80’s , mostly high 70’s . Pretty much a shock getting home to temperatures near 100. :(
