Hostile Fisheries

A small lake in central Washington back 15-18 years ago. Spent so many hours in my float tube cooking in the sun not catching fish while my buddy would pull out 4-5 huge rainbows each time. And when I was fortunate enough to be woken up by a fish, it usually schooled me.

Lake Washington Sockeye. Even when it was open. I mean a single red hook? C'mon....

(even so, It bums me out for all the resources poured into the Lake Washington Sockeye how progress has just become worse and worse....)

It won’t open again unless they come off the 350k escapement number, which will never happen. The city funding that hatchery is a joke, but I understand why they are doing it. Less than 18k back so far this year as of 8/21. If I recall correctly, the last recreational fishery was 2006.

I think it's a difference between what's hard for everyone (musky, steelhead on the swing) and what's hard for me. The Met is at the top of that list. And I'll be there in two weeks.

Some of those above are also in the "old days" category. East used to be a fantastic fishery. I loved the old Westfly trips up there, but it just doesn't fish well at all any more.

I didn't know East has fallen from grace. I haven't fished it for years and years.

Westfly and the local fly club outings up there were a hoot. I remember one when Bob Borden's son hooked a fish and an osprey came down and grabbed it while it was hooked and tried to fly off. Eventually it broke off but for awhile, his son was fighting with the osprey for the fish.

Another time a member let her rod slip off her pontoon boat and she dove in the water to retrieve it. Fortunately there was another member close by who helped her back into her craft once she had managed to grab the partially submerged rod.

East was very friendly to me and I loved catching the large browns but it sounds like the fishery has taken a dive :(

Squalitchew beach in DuPont because it is about the fishiest looking beach around here. I always get my butt handed to me there -- even when there are fish seen within reach. To add insult to injury, we usually see the sea lions and seals slapping their salmon silly as if they're taunting us.

@Shad and I fished it this morning and we both had to carry our butts back up the 1.5 mile trail.

Several years ago, at night, i went to the Edmonds pier to try my hand at squid jigging. I discovered that the pier was elbow to elbow people and squid ink is flying everywhere. One and done.

Actually, I think East is still fishing pretty good, just not for me and that is what is such a head scratcher for myself :). It is one of those lakes where others do better than me and for whatever I am just jinxed fishing that one particular lake. I do know it is losing water, not impacting the fishing so much. I heard that they think with the porous lava rock, it is leaking into Paulina. Odd because it has been good water years in CO the past 3 years but East is shrinking, but fishing is still pretty solid there.

I never made it to any of those East Lake WestFly Rondi's that they used to hold up there, but seems like it was good time had by all. If I did make a couple of those, maybe I would have broken my East Lake curse :).
