Head Lamp

My REI (Petzel?) head lamps finally bit it after 8-9 years of service. What’s out there now that I should give a look at? Want a durable, easy operating, and multiple light settings preferred (strong light a must). Both spot and flood setting? Petzel again?

Thanks

If it ain't broke....that's pretty good.

Here's my standard camping one that's tiny, lightweight, rechargeable, long lasting with 3 light settings, but probably not as bright as you're looking for.

I’m using a Petzel that’s around 20 years old. I’ve been happy with it. I’m sure there’s better/brighter options available. Sorry that I couldn’t have been more helpful.

Princeton Tec 500 is fantastic because it is dirt cheap ($20), durable, seems rainproof, and defaults at turning on red so you don’t blow your night vision.

That looks like a great light! I'm partial to headlamps that use a single AA battery, to keep my battery charging simple. I like the Fenix lights.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you wear your headlamp around your neck it lights up your path and your workspace, but doesn't blind people when you look at them.

I'm on my third Black Diamond Spot, which so far has outlasted the first two combined. I've gone to the Nitecore that Clarkman shows in his post for my hiking and backpacking use. Wasn't sure how well a rechargeable light would be for this, but it has gone on 5-day hikes on a single charge. I really like its simplicity.

Another happy Nitecore user here. Mine is a bit different than Clarkman’s in that it has a two-button lock feature vs the safety tab. It is quite lightweight and bright enough for my needs, but perhaps not yours. I highly recommend USB rechargeable units.

My old lightweight Petzel Tikka XP2 and an OEM semi-hardshell case with extra battery storage still works but is only 80 lumens max. I like having the area in front of me really lit up so I should get a new one for that reason alone.
New headlamps range from 350-1000 lumens.
More recently a small inexpensive 7000K 500 lumens flashlight with a focusing lens has worked pretty well in a headband mini flashlight holder. A red filter I can slip in front of the lens when desired is easy to make.

Very happy Nitecore user as well. I use this all white unit as I lose stuff.
It has been a great light. It has 6-7-8 lighting options. It is USB charge, which is great for local stuff. For backpacking I prefer a main unit that uses swappable batteries so I can look indefinitely at spooky things in the dark (I am a light sleeper-thanks grizzly man!).
The one thing on my light Nitecore is there is no warning before it goes to zero- just the high spot won't go flood anymore, but no dimming at lower levels. It just suddenly goes black.

In short, fantastic campsite lamp, not enough oomph and longevity to save one's butt if you are stuck trudging away lost in the dark.

Again,

My main light for years is an earlier version of this one:

I use these. I have two of them. Use the head band or clip to your hat brim. I clip it to my hat brim. Super light weight. Dimmable. has both Red and green although I haven't found a use for the green light. $20.00 on Amazon

Here is a review site that has helped me find some very good hiking, backpacking, and camping gear for my specific needs. This headlamp article has some tips on what to look for...

A real nice feature of this review, an interactive headlamp beam comparison page

Don't look at me I'm all over the place.

Coasts that gave it up literally the 1st time I changed batteries, left them in the garage, or dropped just once. (I actually like the brand due to thier regular lights)

Cheap no name Rechargeable Chinese stuff that thankfully vanished

Nite Cores and Fenix that I can't kill but coworkers stole

Currently using an O light Perun 2 . 15 lumens up to 2500 on turbo. Charge it once a month and use the crap out of it as an EDC light. They do make a Mini Perun that might be better suited for what you need. The full size is more for industrial needs.
