NFR Hand warmers

Non-fishing related
I saw a hand warmer by Zippo a couple years ago at Costco and bought it. Works really well, but doesn't last all day, only about 3 hours. So I bought a couple more. I have Raynauds, and my hands freeze at the hint of cold weather, so these hand warmers are a very big deal when it comes to winter fishing.

PS this fall I found one of the Amazon sock batteries swelling and splitting. What do you do with a lithium battery that’s exploding??
If it's exploding, as you say, there'd have been a fire already.

Wearing nitrile gloves, and since it's separating, double bag it in 2 zip locks (keeps leakage from contaminating everything) after taping the ends over with a non conductive tape.

Wash your hands thoroughly after doing all this.

Check your locality, there are lithium battery recyclers in most major municipalities. Also check you county recycle sites for turn in requirements.

In 1967 I received mild frostbite on my feet during the ascent of Mt McKinley in Alaska. For 57 years now I have had cold feet and managing them in winter is a full time job. I can sit in a 72 degree room and have my feet become painfully cold. I have a number of ways to counter this and had hoped that electric socks would help solve the problem. They just didn't work for me but I know my feet are a hard core case. I wear merino wool socks year around, change often and try to keep my feet dry. This time of year with the cooler temps I try to keep the house at 73-75 degrees but still get cold feet. One thing that helps is putting deodorant on my feet after a shower and that seems to give me at least a day or so of protection.

Around the house I use microwave socks to warm up cold feet, a 12v electric blanket plugged into a Jackery power unit at the foot of my recliner and a heating pad between the top sheet and comforter at bedtime. It all works but I have to pay attention. Wet wading is impossible in the summer and spring and fall float tubing require trips to the shore to regain feeling in my feet. Perhaps I just need a higher quality pair of electric socks, the popular priced models haven't worked for me.

Love those, but especially love the heated sock
Thanks, but it looks like Costco is out of stock. I did find the same pair on Amazon for an additional $10 and have ordered them.

I bought some expensive electric socks. I was not impressed. Nice socks but never enough heat. Now this hand warmer ( Occupa brand) gets seriously hot! Too hot on the highest setting but the mid setting is just perfect...and lasts ALL day!!. I also bought an expensive electric "base layer" shirt ....same thing as with the socks...just seemed too weak, not enough heat. One of these "hand warmers" is a game changer....Now I want one tucked in each of my boots, and one in each of my front pockets of my pants.

I've used Hot Hands for many years, they work great until one of them slips out of my fingerless gloves into the lake, river or creek. I don't suppose these Occupa handwarmers float.

Get those batteries the hell out of your home right now. If they degrade further, they might overheat and possibly also cause a fire. Put them outside away from anything combustible. Have a look at these photos of mine. This is an electric garden candle. It has a lithium battery and LEDs enclosed in a cylinder of wax, sitting in a ceramic holder. Look what it did to a brand new deck. I showed these photos to our fire prevention officer. He said the circuit had degraded, which made enough heat to transfer through the base of the ceramic holder and melt the vinyl deck surface. I told him I put the POS out onto the wet lawn, away from everything, including trees. He said “Smart move” and suggested I also report it to the federal health and safety authority.

Lithium batteries scare me. Last year, a lithium e-bike battery in a Vancouver, BC apartment exploded with such force and high temperature, that everything in the room was instantly on fire. The man in the room was hit and penetrated by multiple sharp pieces of metal and died. Yes, those e-bike batteries are bigger than pocket warmers, but it made me very wary of these new batteries.

My son decided to go go with battery milwaukee tools for all his work and personal use so that one battery would fit all. When the temp gets below freezing he can wear his milwaukee electric coat that uses the same battery as the tools he uses to make his job easier.

Lithium batteries are indeed scary. I watched a very disturbing video of a guy trapped in an elevator with an exploding e-bike battery. He should have taken the stairs. That being said...these batteries are changing our world and, IMHO, we can cautiously embrace them and enjoy this marvel of technology. One small rechargeable "hand warmer" defeats the coldness of the Pacific Northwest...I like that.

Hey @SurfnFish and @iveofione which specific hand warmers do you have? It looks like @Yard Sale handwarmer is a two pack. Thats a pretty crazy reasonable price.

After reading this thread yesterday, I dug out my old Zippo Handwarmer and tested it all day. It works but I just wish it was a tad hotter. Temp via digital thermometer got it to 114 degrees. Anyone have a solid mod to maybe boost the heat output of the zippo?

Great info so far. Thank you all.

Bob

I've been using this rechargeable hand warmer for a few days now. I just drop it down the front of my base layer. It sits next to my skin, against my belly, on medium or low heat. It is a game changer.

Judging by some of the comments here:

I know there's a lot of concern here over lithium ion battery fires, and for good reason. Thankfully I see the trend away from LiOn and towards LiFePo4, Lithium Iron Phosphate, which is far more stable when damaged. ( been deep diving for upcoming home solar projects, so, yeah)

But yes, micronization of that format is slow, so I don't see LiFePo4 powered hand warmers in our pockets any time soon.

The hand warmers I have are not named nor is there anything on the box to identify them. I think like many Chinese products there is one or two factories making them and every other company buys from them and just puts their own logo on. In this case they didn't even do that, just a model number: YZE-023
