Since returning to Southern Oregon, my dormant passion for upland game hunting has reignited! I’ve been getting out fairly regularly. I’ve had a dream for a while of catching a fish on a fly tied with a bird I shot, and I’ve got one step out of the way!

I got a head shot on a nice big ruffed grouse, so I meticulously skinned it and cured it with borax. Next step is some soft hackles! I’m pretty excited

I also did pretty dang well on the mountain quail last night after work using my late grandfather’s Remington 870 that was passed down to be. I’d never hunted with it before. Thanks grandpa!

870s are the way and the path. Drop em in the mud, clear the barrel and let her rip. Never fail and as idiot proof as shotguns get. Trust me, this idiot knows!

I like it. I’ve always bird hunted with my Remington 1300 youth 20 gauge even as a large adult and I love that thing, but boy did I slay them with the 870. I like it!

Nice work! Save the breast feathers from those mountain quail, too. Stems can be brittle, but the chestnut and gray-blue looks great on a fly.
Thanks! I figured next time a got a mountain quail and had the time and energy I’d make a cape from one as well
