Great tying video on tying theory/etc

While it's geared towards muskies primarily, these same concepts most certainly apply to virtually any streamer fishing. Many of my streamers are actually modeled after what Joe goes over here with counterbalancing, making it look as injured as possible. In my own experience, following that principle has most certainly put more fish in the net for me (not just tiger muskies, but for bass too). It's a little lengthy, but very worth it. I don't really do much of the coating of the head, but have done so in the past and while it certainly works very well, I just happen to prefer forming my heads a little differently. My own personal style is kind of a bastardization of this fly from Joe Goodspeed, Eli Berant's Optimus Swine & Matt Grajewski's Yard Sale.

I spent 3 days in Northern Michigan tossing those ridiculous Musky flies. I was just lucky to have a shoulder that could take the pounding. I ended up getting my one and only Musky on the last day on a large Orange Hornberg that I tossed out of frustration. The guide was amazed/pissed that it worked.
You never know!

Little stuff works too! There's a sweet spot for size that consistently just works better, but more importantly, it's the action, which he really dives into in depth....and how he gets that action with fly construction.

Why would your guide be pissed? He put you in position to cast at the fish and you got one!

Thanks Randy
A lot of thought and insight from an intense dude who obviously lives for pure bread Musky. I will begin applying most of it going forward.
Well worth watching.

Funny you should post this. I finished my swap flies this past weekend, also using a split-ring and separate hook but with a slightly different approach... There's many ways to skin a cat. ;)

Maybe "pissed" was not exactly the right word. We had spent 3 days together (20+) hours of chucking Musky flies at locations he deemed appropriate. In addition, he also spent the time telling me how "only" well tied Musky flies (which are retrieved in the correct manner) are the only possible way to catch them. I also heard of how special his flies were and that he had honed his skill in tying based on years of guiding in his home waters. So, when I got the fish on my ridiculous Hornberg, he was, shall we say somewhat "chagrined". If I remember correctly, it was something like "I can't f'ing believe it, etc.)
