Great to see this growing!

Everyone is probably a little more competitive than they admit. I think it decreased for me with age. I'm not into fishing contest personally but if the kids aren't playing video games then it's a good thing.

Getting kids into the outdoors is a great thing to do. Getting them into fishing is even better. Just remember their attention span is short. So plan on multiple things to do; hiking, identifying flora and fauna, throwing rocks into the water, wading, getting out on a floating device, eating and relaxing, etc. Keep changing it up to keep it interesting for them. The competition is for you is keeping them interested and finding out what they like to do...

I’m not interested in competitive fishing, but I do appreciate what it has done for the sport.

A lot of fly fishing wisdom is, frankly, BS. A lot of it comes from guys who mainly only fished one river for their entire life, but consider their word to be universal. I appreciate that the wisdom coming out of the competition scene is evidence based and has been proven across the globe.

I also think the average weekend warrior can learn a lot from the competition guys, when it comes to river fishing, because both are fishing on foot and have to make the most of whatever water they have access to.

So true. I remember listening to an interview with one of the big names in stillwater fly-fishing. He has books, DVDs, and a ton of fly patterns to his name. His approach was 100% tailored to the water that he guides on and sold as universal. Just listening to his conviction that "his way" was "the way" made me wish he would try the competitive scene...I'm sure he would get smoked.
