Good floating line for Sky G 9' 5wt?

I’m wondering if any of you have experience trying floating WF lines for on the 9’ 5wt Sky G 5wt, particularly for fishing dries.

I’ve been using SA Amplitude textured but find that at around 45ft out it tends to pile up on me. I’m sure there’s some operator error involved but wondering if a different taper/weight would load the rod a bit better in the 50+ range. I don’t need to make hero casts and don’t expect to launch size 10 chubbies 60ft but would like to get the eg size 16 Adams out past 45ft without loop collapse and I don’t want to have to buy 4 lines to test them all out.

Thanks! Yes, I was thinking MPX would be the next likely candidate but also have been worried that overlining might an issue there. Since the Sky G is typically characterized as on the more moderate end of moderate-fast, I erred on the side of true(r) to line weight with the Amplitude.

When I first tried it on the 4 wt after using DT, I was so pleased I switched out the 6 wt to it.

What line are you currently using? SA Amplitude Textured is a series of lines, not a specific line in of itself.

Personally, from what I understand of the sky g, I’d be looking at a SA Trout (true to weight, long head) mayyybe the SA infinity. I prefer longer heads on moderate rods.

Interesting. When I hear the term "pile up" especially out at a longer distance, I tend to think the line is too heavy and with all the extra aerialized line, it's just collapsing. You can try an infinity, or mpx, but you might get more of the same. For me, when my line piles up, it's generally user error.

Edit: quickly looking around online, it seems that most people like the line you have, or similar lines from other manufacturers.

It definitely could be a mismatch in caster and rod that's the primary issue. That said, I've been dry fly fishing in earnest since 2000 (and in my early teens as well) and used multiple rods, none of which have had this same issue with regularity. My last rod was a Helios 2 4wt and it didn't have this problem. I figure I ought to try one more line at least before I sell the rod and find something else!

I recently switched to SA MPX on my Loomis NRX+LP, I think it's similar action, and I am amazed at the increase in distance I get.

Since I haven’t cast a Sky G, all I can mention is a line that I’ve found performs very well, close and far, (for my casting style) on almost all of my 5 wt. rods. For distance, 50 to 60 feet is easy, and another 10 to 15 feet with a double haul. (On the lawn.). It’s the English-made Snowbee XS WF5F-TC. (TC stands for two colour; ivory and blue). I find it’s very supple, casts smoothly, lays out straight, has zero coiling, and is durable. Head: 42.5’ and 208 gr. First 30’: 145 gr.

I actually had an Orvis Pro Trout Textured already & after talking to SA customer support, I was informed that the Orvis line was half weight heavy like the SA MPX & Infinity.

Douglas also responded & recommended Infinity, so I put the Orvis Pro on & problem solved!

Takeaways: 1) Don’t use SA Amplitude Trout Textured on 5wt Sky Gs, & 2) it’s worth reaching out to makers.
