I know some of you are into edible mushrooms, as I am, so you might be interested to know that while playing golf yesterday at a golf course near Hood Canal, I happened to find some matsutake (Japanese Pine Mushroom) that were just starting to appear. You likely wouldn't find them unless you really knew what to look for and where to look. Here's the first button I found that I uncovered so you could see that it is a button about the size of a golf ball:

Some were in piles of dirt that looked a mole hole pile, like this one that I partially uncovered so you could see it:

I found about a dozen altogether; here's a photo them after I partially cleaned them. Due to the tree roots that they were tangled up in, some of them were broken while extracting them from the ground:

Only one had some worms, so the quality was quite good. These were all emerging, so I'd say the Hood Canal area should be good for the next week or two, if you're looking for a place to find matsutake. You can't go on a golf course to hunt matsutake unless you are golfing, but there are plenty of areas other than golf courses to go looking.

Finding lost golf balls on the golf course is fun, kind of like an adult version of an Easter egg hunt, but finding choice edible mushrooms, like matsutake, on the course is even better. I broiled some slices last night for dinner, and sauteed some with leftover Vietnamese pork this morning for brunch. So good!
