Found fly box on the Crooked River Oregon

I get free address labels from trout unlimited. I just stick one on each of my fly boxes. Years ago, like at least a zillion, I read an article by Ted Trueblood about how he lost lots of jackknives just by sitting them on the ground and then forgetting them. It's easy to sit down on the bank to rest while changing a fly or a tippet. So I decided to make it a habit to put my boxes or anything else back in my pocket before doing anything else. One box can hold a lot of small nymphs and dries, enough so that I once contemplated buying an insurance policy for a couple of them. Nah... a good habit is cheaper and better in the long run.

Just out of curiosity.

What's wrong with leaving something that you found alone? It's like a golf ball on the golf course. You know it's not yours and it belongs to someone else.

Regarding a lost fly box. Do you feel like other fishermen are not trustworthy when finding a lost item?
Do you think the owner will not return to look for the lost item?
Solid question and not sure if I made the right choice. Given the timing and circumstances it seemed like the thing to do.

The great part of your actions is that you have ensured the owner has the chance to get the flies and box back if they ask about it at a local fly shop. Leaving it there, who knows what would of transpired...

A lost flybox (especially a big one) filled with flies represents a large expense if you don't tie, and even worse if you do because it represents a huge loss of effort AND expense to replace.

Therefore ALL of my flyboxes are marked with my name and two contact numbers...using an electric engraving tool from Harbor Freight, which works great on plastic or aluminum boxes. Indelible and permanent..and I never sell stuff like that.

Plus for every batch of flies I tie, 25% - 50% go into backup flyboxes kept at home...fishing season is too short to be frantically tying up replacements.

To me a good supply of flies far outweighs any flyrod...I've got plenty of those, equipped with spare reels and favorite lines. And if I lost one I'd simply replace it with an even better rod, reel, and line (and when I find a line I favor I buy a couple of spares because I know the SOBS will discontinue my favorite. I've got a big drawer of brand new replacement Cortland, SA, and RIO (which are great lines if you know how to NOT abuse them).

My big challenge would be with my wife, who'd insist I replace with American made gear despite the much greater price....that's how I ended up with a stupid POS Sage X.

I like the wishy washy, subtle review of the Sage X...

The owner returns to the scene asap when they realize the box is gone.

If im not mistaken, I remember you reviewing the rod in more detail in the past. Something like the reel seat popped off after one day?
Yes...and obviously still fries my ass!

But it did result in definitely not coveting high-end flyrods...and it's one I let my grandchildren use when I take one of them flyfishing. I figure they've got a better chance of breaking the damn thing so I'll feel justified replacing it with a couple of decent flyrods.

Fly boxes and rod tubes get a business card created in Word trimmed to fit under a strip of clear packing tape making them waterproof with my PNWFF avatar, "...*Cutthwoat* Twout" msg, name, and phone numbers. I also laminate cards to go into my pack, etc...

*got spellchecked
