Florida Saltwater Trip Report - New species on the fly

I traveled to Florida earlier this week for work and took a day to fish the mangrove flats about an hour NE of Orlando, close to Cape Canaveral. A steady pounding surf was a reminder just how close we were to the Atlantic.

It took a few minutes to adjust to the boat and saltwater tactics, but once we found the tailing fish it was good fun and I added a Black Drum to my species list. Hooked into a couple of big Redfish but they shook me off.

Nice pics. Were you fishing the Indian River?

I used to do some field work in that area when I worked for USFWS in Gainesville. Shortly after I departed, it was moved to the USGS. One of my fondest memories was going out with the turtle guy from the refuge and we found a couple of hatchling in one of the nests he checked. It was amazing to see them book it to the ocean.
 
Sounds like a fun trip in a great part of America. Experiencing Florida from a flats boat is the best. Awesome you met with Flip too!
