Fishing Goals for this Year

Life of the Party
Let's talk about our fishing goals for this year, a little late for this post I know but I am sure for many of us the season to accomplish our goals is just warming up.
  1. Hook a Springer
  2. Hook my first Puget Sound Lingcod
  3. Successfully catch coho and pinks on the sound with a fly rod
  4. Hook a Pass Lake Brown
  5. Hook my first adult cutthroat on a fly (I don't know if 3-6" fish at Purdy count)
  6. Catch an alpine trout on the fly
  7. Land my first Beardslee (One got away from me last summer)
  8. Catch my first Steelhead
  9. Catch my first trout in a river on the fly
  10. Enjoy river pinks. I really regret missing the bulk of the last run when they were in the river
I have other fisheries I would like to enjoy, but they are all September-February, when I anticipate beginning work as a field engineer at a firm famous for poor work/life balance, hope to get as much as possible from that job and get out

Already hit/am on track to meet my original goal, so I’d like to catch brookies on Skagit tribs for the first time in a long time. Such a beautiful fish, and I haven’t targeted them in years (has it really been decades?!).

Pinks in the Sound are definitely a goal for the summer as they will make up a large part of my family’s meat planning and dog food plan.

Edit: Removed the “S” from Already.

You may actually run into me now because I didn't know Brookies existed in Skagit tribs haha, and I happen to know a couple streams on the upper river. Sorry for crowding the water!

For me, I'm kinda with Rob on this one....not really goals for me, just focusing on a handful of species. Muskies, carp & bass & have fun doing it my way. I do look forward to adding a few new species during a family trip to Australia, however.

I guess my goal, if you can really call it that, it's really more evolution, which revolves around my streamer fly tying. And that's really just to continue down the path of simplification while still getting the same action and effectiveness (or more) on my streamers....with mostly bucktail. What goes with that is making a fly that's more castable than ever. There's just something about a very basic recipe of fur, feathers, flash. Seems easy enough....

Spending more time chucking clousers for ocean run coho in the salt. It would be fun to hook one in the 8lb+ range (haven’t in over a decade now).

I also want to get my first stonefly/hopper eat. Tried during the Skwala hatch, but didn’t have luck.

Fish the Mother’s Day caddis hatch and see what it’s like.

And then of course taking my 4 weight out and exploring new small streams in June/July.

Get wading boots on, step into a stream and wet a line. Then post a photo of first fish of the year.

1. Get out as much as possible. Between a master's degree and deployment I haven't gotten out much the last few years, but this is going to be the year of the fish.
2. Perfect my indicator game. I've already seen an exponential improvement since committing this year, but still room to grow.
3. Take a backpacking fishing trip with my 13 y/o to catch some alpine trout.
4. Take my 9 y/o on the annual family BC trip for his first time.
5. Stay out extra late (around 2am) on my favorite lake to see what the fish do after dark. Mostly for curiosity's sake...I've fished until dark and at first light, but never the graveyard shift.
